Description: A sci-fi retelling of Wagner's "Ring of the Nibelungen", starring Captain Harlock.

The series was first serialized from 1990 to 1991 in Chuukosha Fan, a used car magazine (!). A sequel was published for free directly on Shinchousha's webpage from 1997 to 2000, making it probably the first online manga.

Well that was certainly interesting. Was nice to learn more about his work with Tezuka as an assistant since Tezuka mentioned him in the shoujo version of Hi no Tori in the afterword.

Hey dude, did you know that there's an incomplete final volume that was never published in print? Was published online in Japanese and English and I actually managed to find the entire thing. A lot of the "pages" are single panels too for some weird reason. Probably having to do with the online format.

This manga has a very weird publication history:

The first "opera" vol. 1 and 2 (Das Rheingold) was serialized in a used car magazine. After dropping the project for while, Leiji Matsumoto went on to work on the following operas and decided to "serialize it" online in its entirety in both japanese and english for a couple of years. For whatever reason, when the publishing house decided to collect this already finished web series into tankobon, they didn't get the rights to the last "opera" (Gotterdamerung), so it remained as an unpublished, web-only manga, but to make matters worse, Leiji Matsumoto had planned for this last "opera" to have 2 volumes (9 and 10), but only finished one, and that's probably what you found.

Sadly, only the volume you found (Vol. 9) and some other 3 chapters survived the shut down of the website that hosted it translated in english.

Thought this was dead. Glad to see it's back.

Our patience has been rewarded . Thanks ^.^

It's been so long since someone's done anything Leiji. Hope you finish it.

Yeah totally!, i don't think the 6 part OVA did any justice to the story and wasn't even finished. Looking forward to complete the manga series.

The OVA was kind of a tedious piece of crap where they repeated themselves and did nothing, so here's hoping the manga moves along better.

Oh yea, gotta love it when 2 old school manga characters of this level of fame get together in what should be an epic tale, written by an epic master of the art.
