Hal (AYASE Umi)

Actually, I found it to be pretty well written, you just have to go through the previous chapters again to see what the author was doing.

In the beginning it says "Hal died", but given the story is mostly told from Hal's perspective that could be his own fabricated memory as part of an intense delusion created by his survivor's guilt and refusal to accept Kurumi's death. There are also early hints that the truth isn't what we're lead to believe, like:

 

1) How the grandfather received news of the death (his phone has Hal's picture on the caller ID, why would Hal call his girlfriend's grandfather if he's about to die? Even if Hal didn't know he was about to die and it was a coincidental call, why would the grandfather react like that from the call suddenly dropping?)

2) The children, old lady, and grocer helped him solve the rubix cube puzzle (why would a robot need help solving pattern puzzles, after all?). In the first chapter it looks like he's just idly playing with the cube with no intention to solve it, but you'll notice he never actually solves it himself except for the first time (and even then two blocks are out of place).

3) Hal and Kurumi's argument on the playback where Kurumi seems to be going somewhere (she has a big piece of luggage that she grabs before pushing the camera out of the way).

4) Hal's dream of drowning before the flashback to Hal's childhood days as a disposable diver happens.

I'm sure there are others, but as you can see the last chapter wasn't completely out of the blue.

 

And, tragically, yes, it is possible to recover bodies in seemingly pristine conditions after mid-air explosions. Unless the victims were close to the source of the explosion, the only injuries on their bodies are usually bruises indicating internal damage (from the shockwave of the explosion, being thrown against the inside of the cabin, or when they hit the ground/water) because they've been sucked out, away from the crushing and burning wreckage. Bodies of victims from mid-air accidents are usually described as looking like they're sleeping by people who find them.

True. Despite those points, the initial delivery feels kinda strange...

The art reminds me of Sakisaka Io's, of Ao Haru Ride...

I have a feeling this will be a little bittersweet and angsty, what am I doing to myself

Sakisaka Io created the characters, so that might be why 

This is a good short manga. But I'd like to pretend the last chapter didn't happen. The word I used after "WTF" is "inelegant". I like it better as a 'straightforward' story.

Now I really can't wait for the movie. That ending. q____q

Let's summarize everything.

 

At first it's clearly said that Hal is dead in the plane accident. Hal is a robot to help Kurumi live on.

In the end, all of them are a big lie and the truth is the opposite. At first it's strange for a robot can gain a memory and bleeding after being hit, and after that it's revealed that the one who is dead is Kurumi after they have a couple-fight. Hal get amnesia from the shock and everyone want to help Hal to live on again.

 

Also, a strange logic.

They can recover the body in perfect shape after that explosion ?

 

That was a nice drama. But overall, it is not an awesome story. It's like everything that the MC experience from the start of the story until the anti-climax are just his dream.

I should probably be against this type of series but I kind of enjoy a lot this manga.

It might be cruel for us to see people being replaced by robots, but in that world it's done constantly and they see it in a different way. However, what makes me love this story so much is the carefully dealt art and I'm rather curious about what might they do with the characters. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie~

I like the art...but I don't like the thought of a robot replacing a human very much. That's the thing pulling me away from this, yet I REALLY wanna give it a shot...I think I will give the movie a try. I saw the trailer a few months ago And it looks pretty adorable, I think i'll keep an eye on the movie @_@

Well,it may have potential. The start is quite tragic. And I think it was really a bad idea to make the robot look like Kurumi's boyfriend, he can't be a replacement...that's really not fair... for the robot himself too. But I'll follow this manga to see how the story goes on,I'm quite curious.
