But you can say about most isekai that they are just that. Even the ones that try to be smart and will subvert some things still end up checking most of the major isekai cliches.
Even the ones that start with an interesting premise STILL have the same fucking cliches.

Genres and sub-genres exist because people enjoy familiar things from time to time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

There is, however, a way to write something well and a way not to. This manga takes the latter approach. I don't think all manga of this type do. I think some of them, whether they have gender bending in them or not, go the extra mile in establishing the origins of the character and their situation. It's not that hard, nor is it too much for me to ask for. The pushback on this is bewildering.

There's always the debbie downers who appear out of nowhere to complain about the latest fad in Japan.

The light novel art is far superior than the manga adaptation, in this manga there's a lot of ugly faces, awkward gestures, lazy background, and inability to draw monster._. It's quite a shame since I enjoyed the light novel.

Could be a newbie artist. It doesn't seem he has a lot of manga under his artistic belt, but I'm not really sure using Bato.to pages is even reliable

I seem to be one of the few, and maybe it is because I've not read the light novel and seen its artwork, but I like this one. Granted it is nothing groundbreaking and other stories have far mpre developed character deesigns and backgrounds, but it still speaks to me. Perhaps reminds me a bit of some of the earlier manga I read, which also didn't always focus on mba kground and such.

Gender bender? Pufff...

I'm sorry, but you didn't get that from this manga, either. It's patently ridiculous to suggest you did. He knocked over a beer, blacked out, and heard a voice say some brief, nonsensical shit that even he didn't understand. Then it cuts to years later, well after he has gotten used to his life as she. That's some explanation you've got there.

If you can easily say, "Oh, isekai, isekai, it's isekai," based on what you've read in similar stories, then you can do the same for a hand wave, inexplicable gender bend in a 4-koma where the explanation matters even less.

How is "Well I'll give you a second life, and you can cheat all you want" nonsensical?  Even people who aren't familiar or acquainted with the Isekai genre could connect the dots here.  Come on man.

Hold L1 + R1, up, down, left, right, right, left, down, up. Release L1 + R1
ah also dont forget infinite weapon
Hold L2 + R2, up, down, left, right, right, left, down, up. Release L2 + R2
anyone?

isn't it usually as simple as pressing tilde (~) and doing
/god
/give all
Or in the case of this video (which grants you an immortal body that acts like a ghost; player shots do not just not hurt you but travel through you as if you weren't there. You can still step on others though.

Why include that the protagonist was an isekai'd guy if it won't even matter for the rest of the story?

Because most Isekai and LNs in general have a writing-quality of fanfiction in general. The guy turns into a girl because its essentially wish-fulfillment with a self-insert at its best/worst.

<rant> I blame people's current mentality on this. Older stories used to show character development, people with poor character would learn the hard way why they should become better people, and only after this would they be rewarded for their efforts. Nowadays, a trash pedestrian character gets everything his way for 0 reasons other than to feed the writer's sickening ego.</rant>

I blame you for having a too high of an opinion of yourself for this rant. Isekai is escapism in its most base form, the fact that you expect it to have any literary worth aside from pure, unfiltered entertainment and then have the gall to shit on the writer for HIS ego is ridiculous.

That's why the rating of this manga is lower than this other one A Wild Last Boss Has Appeared!

well there's always something worse ... like Makikomarete (that one with the cameltoe in the 1st chapter)

As much as I enjoy my Burger, lets not pretend that its not a Burger because you replaced the pickles with jalapeños.

Yeah. I got “oh, it’s just Isekai” from those three panels. And that’s all I wanted from that other manga. A short explanation of how the scenario happened. Amazing how me asking for a tiny bit of information clarifying the premise is too much effort for the author to have done.

Like I’m not asking for detailed fucking lore here.

Went back and read your reply to me again. Still not very clear that was the context, but if you say so.

And that's fine that you're okay with three panels of what amounts to absolutely no real explanation in this manga, but you're not okay with a girl standing in front of a mirror in bewilderment that she's not still a guy. I'm not. I think both are comparable and both are stupid. The difference here is, this manga is clearly trying to weave more of a narrative (one that doesn't seem to really use the gender bending aspects of the protagonist's origins at all) and the other is a goofy, throwaway 4-koma that isn't trying to be taken seriously in the slightest.

...I’m not sure if you understood what I meant. I don’t mean there’s LITERALLY a novel of all the in between, but that that in between is what would have been a generic Isekai novel. By all means, feel free to take the manga at face value. I don’t blame you at all because this is a pretty shitty adaptation of a mediocre novel.

And even this shitty opening chapter for this boring novel I dropped has the rudimentary amount of explanation that I wanted. The bare fucking minimum. “Guy dies, gets Isekai’d.” Okay, I understand. I also understand that spending decades in a female body changes one’s behavior. The guy in that manga turned into a girl one day with literally not even an attempt at an explanation and he gets over it in an hour. You think this is the same thing? I seriously hope not.

I'm not reading the novel here. I'm not going to read the novel. I'm reading the manga adaptation and taking it at face value. And it's not very good at face value. It also shares detestable traits with many other similar manga, which is what I was commenting on. You do not have to agree with me, it's fine. Though, you were just complaining about this in the comment section of another manga, so I have to imagine you do.

The journey between his reincarnation and now is an entire Isekai novel, dude. He’s befriended dragons, saved kingdoms, and has connections among the highest beings in the world. The point is that we’ve skipped the Isekai story and are just spectating the casual life of someone after that.

I get tired of these stories where the author is so worried about not being able to grab impatient readers right away that they mostly bypass showing how the protagonist got into the situation they're in. Or they're like, hey, I don't want to scare people off by showing my cute female protagonist as the guy with a guy's face that she used to be! Or they're just lazy and/or bad at writing a story. I don't know. What I do know is that it gets old.

If you want a female character, make a female character. If you want a male character, make a male character. If you want a male or female character that becomes the other sex, then fucking show us. Take us on that journey with the character or don't bother at all. It's a pointless, wasted opportunity at any sort of character development.

Huh, so Illya is completely different from her novel counterpart. Originally she was really aloof and just didn’t give a shit because having already become basically a God after finishing her own Isekai story, she just doesn’t have to care because nobody can touch her. Here she’s really... ditzy and unconfident. Like a completely different character. Thought I was reading a different story. Her being confident was a part of her image as the “knowledgeable receptionist” but now she’s more “ditzy co-worker,” ugh.

Novel was boring and I eventually dropped it but in any case, for those who might still be interested, her role in the story iirc was more like a side character giving advice from the perspective of a seasoned adventurer (though no one except a few actually know she is, so occasionally some people don’t take her advice to heart) and most conflicts resolve themselves through the other characters themselves with her indirect advice as opposed to being solved through her direct interference. It was more a story about everyone else but her.

There’s a short arc for instance about a really strong monster appearing and although she could easily solo the thing, she instead basically coordinates for a large amount of adventurers on how to defeat it, like a raid boss. Never lifts a finger, just gives advice on what formations to take/how to deal with certain attacks, etc. Stuff like that was kinda cool.  It’s like this constant of “Deus-Ex Illya” always being a possibility but never really happening unless only she can solve it.

Guess I’ll give it a follow to see how it turns out. I think this is a step in the wrong direction but it was obviously at the advice of an editor so maybe it’ll be alright? Who knows.

I need an Isekai with a gender-bent MC and a harem that isn't filled with loli's right meow

So what happened to the soul of the original Ilya?

Optimistically, the main character literally reincarnated as Ilya. You know, out of the womb and everything.
