Description: In Giant Killing a ragtag bunch from East Tokyo are struggling in Japan's top football league. The team is going through an abysmal spell right now where they are nearing the bottom of the table and have lost 5 matches in a row. The losses haven't done much to team morale, because it was already low. Fan support, on the other hand, is looking bleak. In the world of football, once the fans turn on a team the end is near. Teams don't recover. Coaches are fired, players are sold, and teams drop to lower divisions where profits often prevent them from ever being successful against even mediocre top division teams. East Tokyo United, ETU, can only blame their coach right now. And Coach is ready to give up this next game to prove to his team and fans, that against the biggest club in the nation he can make this team win.

In 2010, this manga received the 34th Annual Kodansha Manga Award for General Manga.

GINO! GINO! GINO!

Sakai has triggered his goal flags. Expecting him to score any minute now.

Yesss... Tsubaki is improving as a box-to-box midfielder...

Maybe he's asked Tonoyama to stay back when Gab attacks, or maybe he's asked to help Sugi?

In any case, I love how he's improving on the pitch instead of everything being fed to him via Tatsumi

it's still kind of impossible for the ball to went that far i think. either way seems like tsubaki got the right instincts for an attacking midfielder. couldn't have guessed he would go in front of the goal citing his typical pessimism mindset.

it can happen cause it's more about the strength of Sera's kick the GK just went like he could to save it, and we have seen countless of times that Tsubaki in the match when is focusing he really makes awesome movements (that's part of the reason why Kusano and Tatsumi has so much faith in him)

I want ETU to win but I dont want Kawasaki to lost...

And.. old man, if you dont support your team during dark times, dont call yourselves a supporter. You just merely a 'fan'.

The defenders were caught out of position, and Tsubaki is known for being quite quick.

Having said that, keepers should usually try to parry to the side instead of in front of goal for exactly this reason. Probably couldn't be helped though.

that last wild ball went quite far behind that it looks like impossible

This is one of those matches where it gets you on the edge of the seat and you are exhausted by the end from all the tension

yeah and the match keeps going like that, as the kids said end to ends game rarely happens, but they are awesome

Previous chapter : Gino scores from a free kick. Current chapter : Gino makes an interception. GINO!!! GINO!!! GINO!!!

this match is hype

Tatsumi's formation always scares me. No strong defensive midfielders against a very attacking team.. I understand the reasoning to rest Murakoshi but it may be a little risky.

He also has Gabriel as the wingback, who isn't a defensive player. It seems to go against his speech before the match.

Having said that, it seems the opponent seems very confident and might attack without thinking too much in tracking back, and this is what Tatsumi is trying to exploit with the fast-paced defenders.

Also, damn the limitations of the sponsors. It does get a little ridiculous in some leagues where the whole shirt's like a huge billboard and it's distracting, honestly.

Today has been a good day for football.

After 5 minutes of injury time. 5 FRIGGIN MINUTES!!! Freeza could destroy a planet within that time.

He can destroy earth within a few seconds as Golden Freeza!

There was a red card, and a lot of fouls in the second half. I could see there being 5 minutes.

Natsuki got selected to be japanese representative, hory shieeeet!! (dat 41th cover)

YESSS atlast the match is finished

So, who else got goosebumps when the referee made the decision? Great to see three chapters at once, though, the Yamagata match was truly intense! Looking forward to the next match, for that matter.

Dam... Thank you so much for the triple release and finally, a closing to this intense match!

If the author made ETU achieve what Leicester did this season I would have called it unrealistic fantasy nonsense, lol.

Though I agree with the other poster, this manga is just about the ONLY comic I've ever seen that captures the holistic football/soccer experience at a professional level as opposed to the Captain Tsubasa-style Superstar Amazing Forward/Playmaker Guy. The protagonist is not the Zidane-wannabe, but the manager, the club, the team, the staff, the fans -- all of them. Not that there's anything wrong with a classic talented-boy-becomes-superstar-hero story, but I'm much more an FM-player than a FIFA-player.

This manga was one of the reasons I started giving soccer any opportunity. It's certainly more dramatic and up-tempo than the actual thing, but for a manga it needs to be to keep readers engaged. Nevertheless it captures a lot of what makes soccer matches often interesting: the chess match that is each side's formations and approach tactics.

i find gab funny, and tono's 'invisibility' comes close to my heart (being a wallflower most of my life). go ETU!

I smell some phantom passes incoming.

Sorry but this manga is not known for some bullshit/godlike/over the top skill or technique
