I lol'd.
I think you're putting the blame on the wrong person. Everyone mocks him for not being an excelent omyouji like his brother, even the woman he likes; and then, they preach about him not having a strong heart. You don't need to a Ph.D. in Psychology to know that it would cause a huge inferiority complex on anyone. That's bound to break him, unless he shields himself with ego.
An engine that runs on ego can create a great MC, depending on how is handled by the author. My favorite example of this is Black*Star who pushed trough with ego and hardwork until he reached the gods, and probably beyond. Also, the Naruto before all the Sasuke bullshit was great too.
Concerning the brother's death, I simply don't care, because I didn't bond with him. He might as well be part of a flashback for all I care(distasteful, I know).
Hell! This whole one-shot was just backstory for a new series, because there is no way in hell an editor let trough those final pages with all those future characters as a "simple illustration".
Oh, and sorry for the wall of text. As a person living on ego as well, I just couldn't let that comment go ignored.
This needs to have a serialization!
Good oneshot, but I really really hated that fucking MC, if this story gets serialized I hope that the author restarts the story from zero and does not kill the brother in such way, that ruined the rest of the oneshot for me, I really hated the fact that he died for that little shit´s ego

I feel like that this MC is the kind that I will hate with a burning passion. There's just too many MC's that are like him...
Hmm, this looks like it is going to be quite the manga if it ends up getting serialized. I hope that it comes to pass sometime in the near future.
