This was actually my first introduction to the Tale of Genji way back in high school! It's a very concise and pleasant retelling and repurposing of the Japanese classic. You could totally get away with saying you read the abridged Tale of Genji after reading this (only with a layman of course)!

I found the main story entertaining enough to read. It had angst, comedy, romance, and light humor to lighten the whole thing up.
