It's really strange to think of how holding hands has become equal to being in a semi- to holo-sexual relationship. It makes no sense unless there is some religious background to it.
Maybe the mangaka didn't put much thought into it when he rose at least 2 different civilizations with different cultures and different customs/habitual patterns.
