Well, for one thing, using a trackball instead of a mouse is what you will need to do if you have carpal tunnel. Moving to them if you start to get a repetitive motion injury can head them off. Another reason would be for use when you don't have room for a regular mouse.
I use a Logitech Trackball due to the repetitive motion thing. Before decent trackball became affordable, using an upside down mouse like this was a common work around.

Nintendo AM2R is less of a Metroid game than AM2R is, at least on the basics. The new systems make the game too easy T_T.
