Fuuko no Iru Mise

Hmm. Finding it to be quite an enjoyable slice of life manga.

I can see what all the hubbub is about on the rape stuff(Fuuko losing her first kiss like that was extremely offputting =01), but I'm looking past that at other elements of the story, just like she is doing. Noticing the little things that evolve Fuuko's character from a meek, stuttering girl to one with just a slight bit more confidence(and not ridiculously overdone) has been interesting and enjoyable to say the least =03. She's not oversexualized like she would be in current anime trends, which is actually a visual plus for me. AND I'm really liking Nishina as her occasional wingman/potential romantic interest.

As I consider myself an omnivore of manga, I read too many manga titles including some of I don't want to talk about and this one definitely put at least half of what I've read into shame even though it's an old work mmm...
 

Even though I agree with the people here, the story sometimes are just not fun and somehow a bit too disoriented into sexual thing, but that's just like how ecchi manga always tend to result in ecchi situation while this one is directed as how the mangaka think acceptable (well 3 rape related chapters in just the first 11 chapters is a bit too much maybe) mmm...

I had this series on my 'to read' list for weeks, and finally got around to reading it.  Much like Purple Library Guy, I liked the premise of the story, and I really like the protagonist, but the author seems determined to turn this series into:

so I'm done with this series.

This better be not a continued plot-device to get her nearly raped, with no one doing shit about it.

I normally like these types of stories where the MC tries gain confidence by overcoming problems and interacting with customers however I utterly hate the situations Fuuko has to go through.

Back to an earlier chapter, I've often wondered where the "customer is always right, even if they're sexually harassing, groping, assaulting, or attempting to rape the (underage, not that that is the point) hired help," comes from.  As I mentioned in a post on another manga (Tonari no Megane-kun), I've seen that in several different manga, yet I've been told by Japanese friends (usually exchange students) that something like that would cause an outraged Japanese father to turn the manager of the restaurant into fish food, if the JP's (Japanese Police) didn't close the place down first.  There was a discussion on another page in batoto about how "people in the 'Service Industry' know they have to suck it up and remain polite, no matter what" but I don't buy it.  I've seen assholes being tossed bodily out of restaurants, with the police taking them into custody within minutes.  I was in the military for 22 years, and took a lot of crap from senior officers with attitudes, but I never felt I had to lick their boots and tell them they were demigods.  I'm a land surveyor at this point in time, and I got in trouble with my office a couple of years ago when a home owner's association "official" started screaming in my face about how I didn't have a permit from them to conduct my survey (I didn't need one, as CA state law permits surveys even on private property, without consent, and this was under consent by the owner).  I didn't threaten the guy, or kick his ass (dearly though I wanted to), but merely asked him if he had to attend the Nazi Party Junior Gauleiter Course to get his position. This tin plated dictator wannabe called my office and threatened everything and everyone in hearing with lawsuits. The powers in the company told me that I had acted completely out of line, but when I started typing my two week notice letter, everything changed.  All of a sudden, I had acted (according to the boss) with "restraint and humor" and it was the junior gauleiter who was out of line.  Any moron with an IQ higher than an amoeba would know that he didn't have even half a leg to stand on, but the threat of even the most frivolous lawsuit from a retired homeowner with a "title" was enough to make them quake in their shoes. Do Japanese restaurant/customer service managers allow customers to harass/rape their female employees with impunity?  I have limited physical contact with the country (a few days spent in the military in Okinawa and a layover at Yakota Air Force Base), but everything I've learned about Japan and everyone I've known from there tells me that this is a canard.

Overall, I've decided I don't really like this.  It's the kind of manga I would expect to like.  I like slice-of-life manga that deal with more adult situations and all that kind of thing.  And I actually rather like the MC, and her struggle to overcome her difficulty with social interactions and stuff.

But I just don't really like the way this mangaka writes about it; I don't feel happy about the mangaka's "take" on the lives we're seeing a slice of.  It's an individual taste thing . . . it's not like it's badly done, I'm just realizing that when I read this I am neither enjoying it nor feeling edified by it.  So I'm thinking I'll stop.

The different time setting and customs make it interesting to read. Inadvertently I keep thinking of my parents' youth. Not sure if the years coincide though.

BS.  If that were true he'd have at least made a couple changes, tried to improve it.  But it still wouldn't hold water.  She's Japanese, and her instinctive reaction to that claim is that it is bizarre.  Just look at the way the conversation went, look at his expression, the way he's avoiding meeting her eyes.  And when she pushed, notice how rather than push back on the merits, he instead threatens her with loss of a line of credit and/or her job.  It's obvious he's making excuses.  He stole the credit and tried to get her to keep quiet about it by making her feel like she was crap.  When that failed he avoided the issue by switching to blackmail.

This manga is super old it is from 1985 you need to think that in that time what you said wasnt what most people thought and even less in japan.

That only matters so much. Cultures may differ, but there is no culture where his behaviour was right. Consider: There was a crisis. She offered to help out. She did help out. If the results had been bad it would certainly have been OK in many cultures to be a hardass about it, especially if they were so bad that far from helping she'd hurt them.

But the results weren't bad.  The results were good enough that he ran them unadjusted. And then he stole the credit.  OK, so in some cultures it might be OK for him to steal the credit. But I don't see how in any culture it can be OK to abuse and humiliate her and then steal the credit.  Not to mention lie to and blackmail his victim.  I don't care what culture he's from, he's a sack of shit.

OK, so chapter 4 made my blood boil.  That woman wasn't my all-time favourite person, but WTF?!

She's qualified and they treat her like a gofer, no big surprise in Japan.  So then there's a serious job needs doing and nobody to do it, she volunteers, she does it.  So her boss badmouthed her, told her it was crap, then ran with it, made no changes, and put his name on it.  Sorry, don't care what country you're in, that's despicable.  It goes beyond the pattern of nasty sexism to downright abuse.  She should quit.

And then when she complains to her friend, he tells her not to worry about it and just be humble?  That is no doubt marginally within the whole Japanese ethos, but first, I bet he wouldn't be telling her that if she was a guy, and second, he didn't even acknowledge that the treatment was dirty.  How to put this--even if you accept an old-school Asian ethic of service and humility where you shouldn't worry about getting the credit, so that letting it slide would be virtuous action on her part, that still doesn't make what her boss did OK.  He's scum.  Any decent friend would acknowledge that, whatever she ought to do in reaction, her boss' behaviour was unacceptable.  Not getting credit is one thing--getting shat on and lied to and then not getting credit is something else again.

It leaves a bad taste in my mouth that the mangaka kind of treats that salaryman as the voice of wisdom.  He's just a wuss.

Habanero Scans, thanks for picking up this manga.  I read the first five chapters about four years ago, then never saw anything else until now.  I thought it was a very well written story, and I'm looking forward to more.
