Textbook example of a bad adaptation of a web novel. Blegh.
Thank god I thought I was the only one getting completely confused at the plot. I have no idea where half this stuff is coming from. I feel like I've missed a dozen chapters but I've read everything so far. This makes no sense! ><

The biggest differences are the characters imo.
Also, while he's still a spy in the LN, he hasn't raised any suspicions (as of yet). He even has a really cute girlfriend he dotes on. Heh.
It isnt an adaptation of the LN. The concepts are the same and the characters are, but the storyline is completely different.
Think of it like the 4-koma version but more awesome...but yea.... Ln and this, few relevance.
Reading the comments it looks like this is an adaption. Is there a translation group on the LN or a raw that I can GT out there? The adaption isn't bad but they make it seem like the original is way better.

heart-wrenching art... that devolves into slapstick humor and incoherent plot jumps. too fast paced.
Chapter 1 has been fixed (changes been made in translation) and all chapters are now re-uploaded and we're now following the magazines chapter length and not u17 since they cut the chapters.
The grandma is a demon (royalty, no less, it's important for why he can learn the techniques from that scroll). Xiang's mother is human (taken from them somehow).
There is an error in the translation of chapter 1, which is why that's confusing. The grandma is actually the King's mother, not mother-in-law. So the family tree looks like this:
Father = half beast (grandfather), half royal-blood demon (grandmother)
Mother = human
Lei Xiang = quarter beast (strength), quarter royal-blood demon (dark magic), half human (looks & intelligence... well, maybe not in the manhua)
Yeah, honestly, I think it's part of the reason more chinese manhua's don't get scanlated. You have to understand though that there really isn't the same young adult market for them over there. Most stories that make it to a cartoon or comic are almost always going to get 'Disneyfied' in some way. At the very least, they usually cut out or change anything too gory or that kids won't understand. If you want another prime example of a completely messed-up adaptation, check out coiling dragon. There, a grandpa get's turned into a girl IIRC.
I still like to read this one a bit, but it's more like an 'inspired by' fanfic than a serious adaptation. The LN is actually not too long for a web novel though (177 chapters / 22 volumes / completed), so it'll be interesting to see if it get's translated to completion.
