Description: Beginning of 16th century – Alexandra was captured by slave traders from Ukraine during one of their many raids. When the traders arrived in Greece to sell the female slaves, a young handsome man named Mateus bought her and promised to give her true freedom. He hired countless teachers, scholars, and palace ladies to train her into the most perfect woman of her time. Mateus's kindness has caused Alexandra to deeply fall in love with him, and she secretly wishes to be his concubine. But cruel fate! Mateus has already promised her to his best friend… Suleiman the Great, Emperor of the Ottoman Empire! Mateus promised Alexandra of true freedom, but where is freedom when she is in another man’s harem and can only look at the one she loves from afar? Not willing to endure agony, Alexandra promises herself that one day, she will free both of them from their bird cages… but Mateus is the Grand Vizier, power only second to the Emperor himself. So Alexandra must become the most influential concubine in order to have any hope... which also means, bearing Suleiman’s son. However, Suleiman already has a son by another concubine, and this woman is determined to keep her son as the only prince.

Hence begins the story of a slave to an empress of the greatest empire of all time – Alexandra, the woman who would one day be known as Roxelana, Empress of the Ottoman Empire.

Really good, because you know, Hurrem is sly. She is very smart, and she is not one of those damsels in distress. She knows how to use people, she is kind of evil if you ask me. But again, she doesn't think that her (kind of) rival is evil, and I can understand that. They are all doing their best to survive, so, yeah. I love the detalism in the clothing, and when I first read it, I became very addicted.

The sultan's and Ibrahin's relationship is as well very interesting, and different from what you would expect.

But seriously, Hurrem is smart enough to be a villan, and I can understand everybody's motivation in this manga. Is not some silly smut, silly romance mangá.

If this follows historical records at all, it will all end in tears. If you can't be bothered to look it up, go look up Extra Credit's Extra History series on Suleiman the Magnificent, and it should give you a good idea of how it's all going to end.

Seriously, fuck this girl. It's her "lover"'s fault she's there in the first place, and yet she betrays the Sultan (who has given her nothing but goodwill) and gets pregnant with his best friend's child. The sultan is the real victim and I wish he would just execute the both of them (but he'll probably forgive her even if he finds out because muh "feMC good girl did nuthin wrong")

I had hopes for this series, yet it turns out to be just another "all da hot guys love me" girl comic self-insert. She's literally in a harem closed off from men, yet still gets more male attention than anyone in the whole series. What the fuck.

Leave it to Shinohara Chie to make an even more rage inducing heroine than the girl from Anatolia Story. I still get mad thinking about how that ho saved Ramses (simply because "muh hot guy"/hot guy has troubled past/nice to me once/"I don't think he's actually a bad guy!") despite him constantly trying to rape her, kidnapping her, confining her in his country, adding her to his harem, causing her miscarriage, stealing her lips, and making the male lead think she's been NTR'd.

DMCA strikes again?

The worst one was that Padishah ones let Turk princes marry foreign brides. These brides generally were all bitches because. Also this manga isnt about Turks, unlike I thought. It is representing like Turks are the bad ones. But its not surprising since we are hated

Japanese honorifics used in a manga with a Turkish setting? NO.

Can someone join the split two page spreads?

This is really...classic shojo-esque, and it is the elements that make it such that I sincerely dislike.

HOWEVER

I do so love the (mostly)-realism, especially the parts concerning the workings of the Harem. It reminds me of the early parts of Creation by Gore Vidal, a book I am greatly a fan of.

Hopefully the really cheesy, stupid parts of this don't drive me away, there are elements I really enjoy.

A timeskip is comiiiing or maybe not.... Also,
Spoiler
omg i knew there was a reason i liked this so much! it's by the same mangaka who did anatolia story
ahhh, always when i read this i get goose bumps
@p3pe..
thanks for the link... i will definitely check it out and read... much appreciated.. :)

@Gizmos
i just went to check Hurrems biodata at wikipedia.. thanks for the info.. ^^
oh my god this is everything i could ever want from a historical shoujo manga
Will be interesting I hope, though I am not that engaged to it yet, like I was to other works of Shinohara.
I lol @ Suleyman being a bishounen to fit the taste of the japanese readers.
He is said to be one of the greatest rulers of that empire, so it's decline also had it's roots in his time.
On Hurrem herself, well the infight in a situation like that must be insane, so you really can't become the no.1 without being sly and good at intrigue. Will be interesting to see how Shinohara-sensei bends history, so that Hurrem doesn't look to bad.
Realistically she just had no other choice, if she didn't want to see her own children die.
@annihilator
There is a tv series going on, though I haven't watched it for a while (so i don't know what happens in recent episodes). If you are interested in ottoman history or Hürrem, you can try watching it. I should warn you it is more like a story of Hürrem and Süleyman's love. Not a fully accurate history series. But has ottoman motives and dailylife stuff i think :)
If you are interested you can watch it subtitled in english, at youtube i think though i have never tried it...
@Annihilator:
You can start by reading the novel by Colin Falconer: http://www.amazon.com/The-Sultans-Harem-Colin-Falconer/dp/1400083125
And yes, Hurrem in that book is described as sly as fox.

I think it's better to treat this Shinohara's adaptation as different interpretation of the Turkish harem (or Hurrem's true character, to be precise). It's unlikely Shinohara will make Hurrem as sly, cruel person, as most of her past female leads have such virtuous character. But it would be interesting to see her Hurrem's version become cruel and heartless...
@Gizmos, you mean Hurrem is really a historical Icon in your country? hmm... and she's not like the way it is portrayed in this manga.. is that what you are saying? interesting.. i might do a real research... ^^ i like Hurrem's character here though.. :).. she has this innocence and yet remains vigilant..

thanks again friendship scan... i just can't get enough...
lol as a Turkish person, i find this very funny with all characters. From what I know, in reality Hurrem is a total bitch. She is very sly and makes Suleiman kill his son and ibrahim. And real competitor to Hurrem should be Mahidevran-she seems so kind in manga though- not Vera. Btw, Suleiman looks so gay. Search him on google, see th difference lol.
Other than that usage of Turkish words sounds so funny to me :D
Well, i look forward to new chapters to see how this will play out. I hope it gets better than the way it is(which is now the classic shoujo.) Thanks for releases Friendship scans :D
annihilator, Registered on the new forum, I think it would help our team already see that we have fans.... :)
@Catriona- i wish i could help really... ^^ i have no such talent as yours... how one donates? in kind or monetary?

how about being loyal fan? ^^
Hi you can join us! Or donate to us! :D
is there anyway to make the release faster? :)

just asking... not demanding... ^^
i'm liking it... :)
hmm.. ok.. following it... looks like it has historical essence and interesting... :)
The chapter will be up in 24 hours, if you can't wait, head to this link to get the chapter: http://friendshipscans.xanga.com/762884713/release-drops-of-dreams---the-golden-birdcage-chapter-1a/

My comment: only half of ch.1 is released so far, so I can't say much. But knowing Shinohara, this title will be worth a read.
