Dragon's Dogma Progress

This is insultingly bad.

One question.  What happened to his girlfriend?  You see him save her from the dragon in the last but one chapter but you don't see her in the last chapter after he defeated the dragon.

One sec here. You two are confusing me - did you guys actually play the game or not? A couple things I need to clear up. (spoilers below, you have been warned.)

The Dragon IS a past arisen. That point is driven home by one of the "bad ends" where you fail to kill the Seneschal, and is further driven home in dark arisen by the backstory of the dark arisen final boss. None of this is any way up for debate and it isn't fanfiction.

 

Also, I totally agree that the story's execution was weak. The fact that your lover was picked arbitrarily was incredibly stupid. Most of the NPC's you interacted with were complete twats. They completely failed to finish an interesting storyline (NEED MORE MASON).

 

But I think the main story arc was well executed. The story had a very typical high fantasy at first. Dragon attacks your town, well you better go kill the dragon. Off to the castle with you! And aside from a few subtle reminders that something isn't quite right it pretty much plays this straight. I.E. Is the king actually insane? Why was he trying to kill his wife?

 

The payoff for this rather mediocre first half of the game is the second, where the veil is ripped away and you are forced to see that the wold is far more dark than it originally appeared. Unlike the souls series though the world's lore is rather opaque until you finish the game once; its only on subsequent playthroughs that you have the context to see the world building they've been doing, the clues they've been putting in that point to the world's true nature.

 

Overall, I'd give the story a C and the world building a B-.

Thats nice, but it has little to do with world building. All you've done is highlight the game's *BIG PLOT REVEAL*.

By your logic, Dark Souls should get an F for world building because theres no big plot reveal, the lore is opaque and you have to playthrough multiple times simply to have the right context.

Let me elaborate on this for a second.

The past arisen that fail to become Seneschael are indeed the dragon, that is correct. But if you fight any of the three special forms of the drake, the wyvern, or the other kind of dragon(found at The Water Temple thing, the Bluemoon tower, and I forget where the last one is), they give special dialogue, like one saying that a youy are a fellow country man, implying he was once human and from Grandsys. With the fact that Arisen that fail against the Seneschael become THE Dragon, it's beleived and implied that normal dragons are a result of either failing before beating the dragon, either dying to the dragon or beforehand. That would also explain why they're weakpoint is there heart, or give some idea. Not necessartily explain but elaborate

And when looking at BBI, we see that after we beat the original daimon, the new daimon, the darkness or whatever that still exists, becomes a dragon. This implies that in all arisen there is a dragon in you, an inner beast.

 

Now in any case...come on, really? Who the fuck uses Holy attacks on Grigori? If you're a mystic knight, just use abyssal trance and abyssal anguish. Seriously now.

So nostalgic, the game was amazing.

Writing stories for games is very different from manga or novel, which mostly consist of dialogue between character. You'd want players to focus on the gameplay rather than long dialogues and narrations if you were the producer, no? I'm afraid not many people enjoy reading line after line of sentences, especially gamer. That being said, it is by no means an easy job writing for a game when you need to captivate the gamer while keeping things brief and not flood them with walls of text just to give enough details, and if any interactions of the character were to take place will mean players is diverted from the gameplay until the conversation is over. Ask yourself, how many times have you skipped the story just to proceed to the actions, even if you did not do this, I'm pretty sure a lot of people did it before.

 

Personally, I do not judge a game or manga just by the story-line but with every aspects as a whole.

I disagree. The story wasn't that well told, and npcs did feel wooden, but the feeling of the world was cool, the exploring and venturing and fighting monsters (it did get repetitive due to only having one spawn for everything, not having varied randomized spawns) HOWEVER, the actual world building and lore is interesting, I mean, one really cool theory very much supported is that idea that dragons are arisen that have failed to defeat the dragon and died, or died before facing the dragon. And it has some backing evidence. The Sensechel and the rift stuff was also well done I think. Personal opinion.

Oh, and Dark Arisen had really great writing, as well as great abck story and some of the things implied diving more into the lore of the world

As fun as the gameplay in Dragon's Dogma was, the writing and story was bullshit.

I didn't know there was a Dragon's Dogma manga. I always thought it was a game and world worthy of one. Could you imagine it with the art level of something like Berserk though? That would be sick. Would really be fitting too.
