Description: When 10-year-old Kaneda Shota was involved in a car accident that claimed the life of his father, it changed the course of his life forever. Even though his mother got a job and tried her best to support her son, money was always tight. Now, unable to afford college, Shota works a part-time job, in addition to his full-time job at his uncle's factory. He dreams of one day saving enough money to go to college. He lives alone, on the second floor of one of his uncle's warehouses, and doesn't have any friends. Everywhere he goes, he rides a bicycle, with headphones to block out the flashback-inducing sounds of the cars.

His quiet way of life is about to be interrupted. Due to pressures from the economy, Shota's job at his uncle's factory is going to be cut to half-time/half-pay for a while. In addition, Shota's uncle has agreed to lend the first floor of Shota's warehouse to a college club. This club is building a solar car to enter in a race, and they're hoping to get Shota to lend them his mechanical expertise. Will Yazaki Junko and the other club members be able to handle Shota's anger and bitterness, and draw him out of his self-imposed isolation?

I still have a problem that he worked as a traffic guard when he hates cars

Anyone recommend some of these "grimdark" seinens to me? I've been looking and havn't been able to find any...(not looking well enough apparently).

I'll stick to grimdark seinen from now on, too bad a lot of those are are banned on batoto.

So speaks the devil.

I've come to the point where I can't enjoy most of the manga I would have enjoyed in my younger days. I'm tired of the silly "main character sad asshole but everything gets sorted out with the power of friendship" trope. So much that I was hoping at least the dog would die in the fire the heroin started, but no, it was just a plot device to make their friendship even stronger.

And let's not forget the character development.

Oh look, if it isn't "guy who can tell the weather very well". I sure am glad he was added as a character in this manga.

Quite nice, they didn't prolong it to eternity (like making them loose the first race and wait for next year etc.), tho I missed the romance part, which was only hinted... :'(
@Battle Franky 37: I belive that the way in which the story ends is just perfect for a short manga. If they wanted to make it longer then the way it ended should be left for a later part of the plot. As Yan Yan said, it is unrealistic the way that it ended, but in the manga/anime universe it isn't that strange that things ended this way. All in All, it is a very nice fast and light reading.
Nice manga. I like Murata-sensei's art.
The story between the protagonists was nice, but i wanted something more.
I always like some romance.
mm, I think continuing it any further would've spoiled it.
The ending was to be expected, but it's a little unrealistic. I liked it though...
You think so? I think they wrapped up the most important points very nicely. In any case, there wasn't any real way to continue it from where it was.
Loved this series, its a fantastic, if short, read.
damn!! it ended when the plot was getting interesting. Son many things left unresolved.
