Really? I'd deem the use of "chuuni" here to be more or less appropriate, myself. The names are about what I'd expect from someone writing a fantasy story in middle school. (As is most of the plot, yet in spite of that or perhaps because of it I'm finding it all quite enjoyable)
Actually, this one happens to be Chinese.
And apparently you haven't read much manga, but there's a ridiculous amount of JAPANESE and KOREAN mangas with western named characters that aren't "chuuni" (you should also wiki what it means, you're using it wrong). You should try reading some. Like... on this website.
