This would certainly be worthy of a serialisation, there's plenty of space there to make an interesting story, I can already imagine some of the challenges the characters would face and various avenues to resolution. I could probably write up a story on it if I really wanted to, though I can't draw consistently enough to make a manga or doujinshi.
I could see this being an actual series or an extended one-shot because the way it ended made room for a sequel.
