Removed "Best Selection" from alternative titles. Best Selection is the name of an omnibus that is a compilation of Hyoubu arcs from the ORIGINAL manga. I'm not sure why I keep seeing this mistake pop up.

I'd say you should try to start reading from around volume 18/chapter 162, where the heroines are older and the story is slowly starting to focus more on the main plot instead of individual missions. If you watched the ZKC anime (I think you did?) you're good to go. If you didn't, you'd need to at least have an idea about Yuuri and Black Phantom or it could be confusing for you and they're a pretty important part of the story. They're basically an illegal organization that brainwashes espers to sell them as weapons.
That being said, the manga alternates between serious arcs and comedy/slice of life arcs, so it's not like there's a point in which the comedic tone is completely dropped.
Another thing you could do would be reading the arcs that focus more on the members of PANDRA.
Oh, Andy and Yuugiri also make a few appeareances later on.
It you mean what part of the main series this fits into, unlimited is AU, there's no point in the main series that it can go without totally wrecking everything with plot holes and one of the recent 4komas implies the unlimited was a dream hyoubu had. If you mean "when does the main series start getting darker" that would be when the black phantom gets introduced in chapter 95.
HOWEVER it's important to warn you, those first 95 chapters aren't exactly expendable. I have a chapter list on my blog with notes on them that you might want to have if you do start in the middle because stuff comes back, and zkc has like 40 different reoccurring characters.
If you are just having issue READING the series and would rather WATCH it there is a not exactly great 50 episode anime that happens to cover the majority of those first 95 chapters.
If you are having issues with zkc being too goofy... you're probably out of luck. Because you see original series hyoubu is um

Oh thank god. We (the group that does the main series) haven't been able to find the scans for the unlimited very easily so there were a bunch missing including this chapter, and we couldn't get started. I'm glad someone was able to find scans to use I've been really mad at not being able to release this one.
As someone who only saw the anime for THE UNLIMITED and couldn't stand reading the original ZKC from the beginning, is there some point where I can start reading the original from? From some point where it gets more like THE UNLIMITED, or is there no such thing?

As much as I like Hyoubu as a character, I don't see the point of an exact anime-to-manga adaptation. A little variation would be nice.
Almost didn't recognise the artwork, and then realised that maybe Shiina is adapting his artwork to give an anime look to it, haha.
