| Description: | Japan, 1995. After graduating from high school, Ito Kaiji moves to Tokyo to get a job, but he fails to find steady employment because the country is mired in its first recession since World War II. Depressed, he festers in his apartment, biding the time with cheap pranks, gambles, liquor and cigarettes. Kaiji is always thinking about money and his perpetual poverty frequently brings him to tears. Kaiji's unrelenting misery continues for two years until he is paid an unexpected visit from a man named Endo, who wants to collect an outstanding debt owed to him in Kaiji's name. Endo gives Kaiji two options - either spend ten years to repay this outstanding debt, or board the gambling ship Espoir ("hope" in French) for one night to clear the debt. Using a con, Endo pressures Kaiji into accepting the deal, believing he will never come back from the voyage. ***Please Note*** The Kaiji series as of now is divided into 5 parts, and this is the 1st of those parts. Incorrect, Mangafox is the one you're thinking of and they have just a mishmash of chapters from different parts, all under the "Kaiji" label. This part has not been translated.

People who keep saying that this part has never been fully translated are wrong. Looking at scummier manga hosting sites shows that this part has in fact been translated in it's entirety, so I really don't know why the rest hasn't been uploaded on here as well yet (though I have no idea as to who the scanlation group is, so they might be against rehosting their translations as far as I know).
are there any raw scans anywhere for this? all the links i find seem to have been taken down
All of it. The anime is very faithful to the manga, you won't be missing anything by not reading the manga for part 1. That's why it's lower in priority than the other parts.
