The perfect ending would be breaking the old lady's legs and burying her with the shrine when they bulldoze everything. Eye for an eye, and all that.

In that aspect the anime changed the plot into a slightly better one.

yep, i pretty much too pissed myself when i see Shadow Yuuko. Holyshit that was scary!!! Mind you that this is a static image, not "screamer" or movie with sound effect yet it is 1000x time more like a jumpscare to me than any other horror shit.
and yet when i read about Yuuko death, i can see her teary eyes when Shadow Yuuko was strangling Yurakiko. Truly a powerful story.

It was a bittersweet ending but i love it nonetheless. I think it is open to interpretation. I hope to see more works from this author.

I thought this series was pretty good, I guess I'm just butthurt because I liked kirie better and she never had a chance. I would have been more satisfied if she had at least confessed her feelings to teichi and in the end teichi chose to be with her, since she looks almost exactly like yuuko.
Still it was a pretty good manga, feel bad for okonogi though, she was introduced in the 2nd chapter and got no screen time.
The only thing I didn't get about this is the date. According to the chapter where theytake measurements of themselves (height, weight etc.) on the paper the date is 2010. If it's the "current" date then the sacrifice took place sometimes in the 1950-s and if it's a birthdate then it's sometimes between the two world wars. I don't know much about the situation in Japan around these times, but things like this could really happen in these "modern" ages?

Honestly, I loved this series, its one of my top favorites and impleis romance even in the end of one's life. So, even with-out the little love triangle, it had a strong plot and a (weak looking, nerdy like, antisocial, weird) but honest and strong-willed MC. Something which lacks in many works.
Also the epilogue is something nice, really great seeing the end. Altho just not enough to drop Kara no Kyoukai from my top favorites.
Great manga. To be honest, after I downloaded this series, I didn't even realize that this was Horror as well. I found this by searching for Romance + School Life manga. At first, it was a little bit creepy to be honest. But it's not as scary as Horror movies, so I'm actually fine with it. The story is pretty good as well, thought Yuuko's past is just too cruel. And nice ending as well. Man, as everyone else said, there're so many feelings in this manga as well. Even thought it has some Horror materials, it's still heart-warming, especially since there're Romance in it as well (but of course Romance isn't the only heart-warming point in this series). Anyway, it was worth reading this. Recommended!

This was indeed a really good and interesting read. I've had it bookmarked for a few weeks, but finally decided to read it today. Glad I did read it and not forget about it like I have with many other mangas.
Dude ..... the manga is actually quite fucked uf if you want to say so .... the Akihito too .... so nothing to say here, still worth , so much worth the reading. My impression about the manga, may be a spoiler somehow.
So about Yuuko's past:
God that was an awesome ending, it's true, nowadays it's so rare to see a happy ending like this one. Also I liked how there's a fare share of kisses in the manga (that too is also really rare).
