if you got enough strength to swing a massive unwieldy log, you might as well pull the opponent's leg off and beat then to death with that. 

Or else get a freaking pole arm, iron quarterstaff, spear etc.

 

The wood is the way to go.

Flaunting your rock hard wood against your enemies by smashing, piercing, or slapping them with it, while impressing the ladies is the way to go compared to just measly waving a short sword (lol).  There's nothing wrong with erecting your wood and defeat all that opposes you , just grip it hard enough and move at a fast pace.

I can just imagine a scenario where the hero gets shanked by a thief in a dense forest where his log gets stuck from all the other trees standing in the way. Game over MC weeb.

Anyone who could wield a log would be perfectly capable of using a sword, though. There's not really any advantage to a log. I mean, shit, if you want a club, flipping a sword around and striking with the hilt will make for a better club than a log, which is very poorly-balanced for it (it sounds dumb, but it's an honest-to-god technique, known as a "murder stroke").
