Description: A manga on Urasunday Magazine, Sekai Oni follows the story of a little girl called Shinonome Azuma.

With her parents dead or missing, Azuma has been taken into her uncle's family. However her new family has been harshly abusing her, to the point she has become so mentally unstable she developed the rare syndrome of Alice Through the Looking Glass, which makes her see things that shouldn't be there reflected on mirrors, water, glass, etc.

Everything begins when the things she sees start affecting the real world directly, and the barrier between reality and illusion breaks apart.

Welcome to the world at the other side of the mirror. Welcome to wonderland.

LMAO, this comment section prepared me for an extremely disappointing ending but i didnt think it's gonna be that underwhelming. EVERYTHING was resolved off screen. welp. this series fell short of its potential and, boy, was it some potential. it could've been brilliant but rip...

Spoiler

i had so much fun reading this tho, it was totally worth it. batshit.

VERY strong start (20 chapters long, mind you), softer mid and quite... mild end. Was not a bad read, but the end felt just disapointing. Gotta give it a 4, even if it pains me.

Like I said, STRONGEST start from what I remember in all manga reads; but by the end it was just bleak even if somehow interesting.

This part made me laugh

From what I can tell her Mom probably was not the greatest person to start with. Thus as Azuma got older she realized it and left.

Also she was probably in the "ITS NOT A PHASE MOM." kinda of thing

One world ends and another continues, and the world goes on.

Dat ending...

You were doing fine up to that point.

So why did Azuma leave the house?

I was a fool for expecting something from a manga who has a homosexual drug addict as its main hero/idol. Screw this! Once again I feel the despair of knowing I had wasted my time on something so stupid. It's so silly and stupid for me to get into this same situation again it made me laugh. Sad life.

I mean... I tried to like this, but it was so freaking average. I couldn't sympathize at all with the characters, the world seemed to lack scale (kinda the same issue Attack on Titan has), it's not clear who the baddies were or where they came from, etc., etc.

So why did Azuma leave the house?

quote name="MrPoogly" timestamp="1445347119"]The prize: the banality of a normal life in a first-world country.[/quote] I think this is it... It doesn't end in a happily ever after but its a happy end with friends... It was refreshing not to see Azuma end up like any other ending... I laughed when I read her mom wasn't she thought it to be... It was new About the battle Isn't King the only thing in Maze that gave them a hard time...most of them are like slave characters? Even if there are enemies, it would be easy if not one side massacre. Especially with Hopes and Wishes Azuma I'm OK with that.

I think I understand what he means: any story that's building up to a big climax, like this one, feels pointless if the ending doesn't pay off. It's the same reason people hated the ending of Lost. The entire show is building up to one reveal, so if the reveal sucks, every other episode can be great and the audience can still feel cheated.

In this case, the story is building up to a dual pay-off: the mutual destruction of the two worlds, and Azuma's struggle with her personal demons (no pun intended). The destruction of worlds was solved offscreen, and Azuma's character issues were never fully resolved. And the resolution we did get was rushed.

It would be like if, at the end of Harry Potter, there was a time skip just before the big fight with Voldemort, and they skipped the whole fight and all the resolution and cut straight to the scene nineteen years later. So we see their kids, we know they made it, but we don't know how they won, or what they learned, or anything the reader wants to know for a satisfactory ending.

Which leaves it feeling pointless.

The goal of any manga, and indeed most stories, is to entertain. But when the story is structured like this, part of that entertainment comes from a promise of revelation, a promise that everything is going to build to one big satisfactory ending. This one didn't. It reads like it was canceled, and they only had one chapter to wrap everything up.

That's a pity, in a series that was so good at creating poignant character moments. I'm sad they couldn't end on one.

Kind of like FF7

Not sure what you mean, what is the point of any manga other than to entertain?

And this is how it ends eh? meh. Can't help but feel this was all a big fetish manga or something, what even was the point?

And this is how it ends eh? meh. Can't help but feel this was all a big fetish manga or something, what even was the point? If you like grimdark, other manga does it better like Berserk or something. I still like the king though, best character in the whole manga.

I think Azuma really takes it after her mother. She's so careless.

And that epilogue... Saki and Utou breaking up is so fitting for this manga. It's not a typical "happily ever after" scenario; the relationship between Azuma and her mom isn't what she dreamed of; life goes on, and never perfectly.

I'd actually go one further... it shows they've likely both grown and developed as people. They could have grown beyond "Must have someone to be my reason for existing" and "Must take responsibility" without breaking up, but having them break up is the clearest (though on the other hand, it's also the quickest and easiest) way the mangaka can tell us that at least one of them has moved beyond what would be a very sad reason to stay in a relationship.

Well damn, that was unexpectedly expectable. Of course Azuma wouldn't care about any of the inhabitants of Maze, and it was silly of Seki to think so - they don't have anything to do with her. Azuma doesn't weigh things on any moral scale but her own desires.

Overall, though it may be atypical and confusing for the typical reader, you dig into it a little more and find that it was a great series.

I still think the series was great, but the ending was a copout. What was the point of the series? What did the characters learn or earn? How did they change?

Basically...they haven't. And everything I wanted to see either didn't happen, or happened offscreen.

I don't mind that the relationships aren't perfect; that part fits the theme of the manga. But when there's no reward, and the characters haven't changed, and everything just kind of drags on in a mundane existence, then what were we reading for? What was all that build-up about Azuma changing and learning? What was the big deal about each character learning to overcome their personal demons, when they're all going to end up in the exact same place they started?

IMO, the ending undermines the point that the rest of the manga was trying to make. Also, it's unsatisfying and lacks impact. Compared to the beginning and to the rest of the series, it just falls limp.

The prize: the banality of a normal life in a first-world country.

the only thing that bother me about the ending is.. the sheshires (seshio, masoto, another one who returned to maze, scapp and pero) did they all dead? (well, i hope pero and scapp will be alive since he's anomaly after all and he know azuma, and for seshio and masoto, i really don't know. the another cheshire and masoto talking like they can leave wonderland but weren't they all abandoned the body already?)

Did...did we miss a chapter before the last one? Was that it? Did she destroy the other world after all? Also her mother was her driving motivation for the entire damn series and then after living with her for a few years she's leaving? Really? I would really just like a bit more content to show the lead up to that final chapter, because I mean otherwise as it has been said the end would be really anticlimactic and actually kind of boring

While I agree the ending feels rushed, I am actually glad they didn't show azuma splitting and killing another dimension. This leaves more to the imagination so it works. And besides, how can a world devil end an entire universe? Nothing we've seen so far suggests that they can accomplish such feats, not even the king. So it really was the author's cop out ;)
I'm really not sure what more lead up is required, it was quite elaborated already. The mother being a bitch and saeki/utou splitting up gave us a nice back to the roots feeling and a reminder that not every detail can work out, even if a happy ending would suggest such.

Actually, the part they should've fleshed out is the epilogue imo, with more details about post-timeskip where they just talk about what has happened and where these characters who we spent the majority of the read stand now. That would've been more effective. After all, sekaioni is a series that tends to tell instead of showing.
Thanks for translating this series! Very good job! Enjoyed the trip from beginning to the happy end!
Wished someday we could have an anime adaptation of Sekai Oni. But! It should be an Adults Only rating OVA, one so gory, so pornographic, so violent, that puts South Park in shame.

Well, that ending was anti-climactic.

Thanks for the trip, Tsuki to Chikyuu Translations!
