It's a smut story, why would you think people read this? Another question : do you think porn is an unpopular genre? I'll admit bato.to probably isn't the first place I think of to find that kind of story.
 
That said, this one has an actual story and the more it went on, the more I felt intrigued by it. Despite the fan service (which is pretty hot), the MC has some depth to her story, I genuinely feel bad for her, and the whole thing is intriguing enough to compel me to continue without the idea of just having a good time.

When I said "The masturbatory version of Everyone gone to the Rapture" I meant it quite literally, because that was all there was to the story when I first encountered it. I read the manga for a short while from the release of ch.1 to the point where she starts to have flashbacks about her brother, and then never returned because the manga didn't intrigue me.

To later see the same manga that I haven't read for a year or so suddenly pop up among the most popular manga on the site is quite the surprise, no matter the manga. It could have been "No Gun Life" and I would have been just as startled.

Even then all my memories of the manga were that it had a girl going around using different objects to masturbate, and an overweight guy who seemed to be quite nice. There were no other characters at the time, and not much of a mystery aside from everyone being gone.

Based on what I knew the story didn't seem like the strength of the manga. However, as we all know sex sells, so I assumed that might be the source of the manga's popularity. When I said "I guess it was the boobs" it might be referring to this fact. But what do I know, since I apparently think porn is unpopular =P

What does happen from time to time though with these softcore stories is that the plot becomes so nonsensical, or perhaps good in this case (I don't know), that it becomes the main reason to read the manga. I have seen it before, and wouldn't be surprised if this was another case. If so I completely understand why people read it, but again I never reached the point where the manga became intriguing so I don't know.

TL;DR When people are surprised it might not be because they dislike the manga, but because they haven't seen it in a long time and are thus surprised when they encounter it among the most popular manga on the site.
