Muv Luv oddly enough is the closest thing your ever going to get a Warhammer 40k anime. I should really get around to playing the game with those patches, but I feel too lazy at times.

I'd have to agree. All aliens are hostile, and even the good guys (humanity, obviously) are oppressive and evil compared to our present day conceptions. it hurt me when I played the game, and again reading the manga that they concentrate so much on the US being assholes (I'm so sorry Canada), but that's just the way the grim dark past/alternate universe is.

I second this. I especially like the small inclusion of titbits of some of the stuff that weren't shown in the VN. Like how Takeru and Meiya travelled alongside Meiya twin sister at the end of the chapter.

More than that, one thing I honestly loved was how Meiya broke down crying at the sight of the little plushie/doll Yuuhi gave her, it was a moving moment that was not present in the visual novel (where she simply walks away).

Sayoko was also a character I liked a lot, and for the record, she was created for the manga but had enough success to be added to the The Day After VN.

One or two more chapters. I disagree with the arc being boring though, and I've enjoyed it in the manga far more than I did when I played the VN. But to each their own I guess.

This coup arc is so boring, when does it finally move on from it?

Overall, this arc doesn't play that significant a role in Muv-Luv's grand plot and served only as a stepping stone in the story, to give some more "substance" or development for the characters, Takeru and Meiya in particular.

 

The coup attempt by itself no, it's not significant when compared to the threat of the BETA. However, given that it was sponsored by America and UN hardliners (it was combat hypnosis that made Irma fire during negotiations), this is the first example that someone high on the food chain wants Alternative IV to fail.

My understanding so far, idk?: So, Japan has 2 factions infighting? and the UN and MC are helping out the princess... but the army is the one doing the coup to save(?) the princess, but they take their own princess hostage? but isn't the MC part of the army?

Takeru and his squadron are under the United Nations, who were called in alongside the U.S. forces by the Japanese government to help suppress Sagiri's rebel forces. The Japanese infighting you see is between the Sendai (Japanese) government and Sagiri's coup forces.

Sagiri and his fellow rebels accuse the Sendai government to be traitors that allowed foreign powers, namely the United States, to influence the nation and exploit Japan. They intend to drive out the foreign powers, dissolve the Sendai government, and reinstate a more pre-1900 Japan that was ruled under the Royal Family/Shogun (Meiya's sister or cousin, I can't recall at the moment).

Overall, this arc doesn't play that significant a role in Muv-Luv's grand plot and served only as a stepping stone in the story, to give some more "substance" or development for the characters, Takeru and Meiya in particular.

The Visual novel bring back a lot of memories. I can say that the VN is still one of the best VN of all time.
