Keep in mind that the "for the family!" mentality was for those with wealth and prestige to their name - in other words, people who could afford to visit entertainers like Tenome and worry about the long term future.
The average wartime Japanese citizen, while certainly subjected to the military state's indoctrination, was struggling just to put food on the table and probably did not act like Kyousuke's mother in the final chapter.

Great stuff. My personal favorite part is the fact that the author keeps in mind the fact that the Japanese mentality back then was very, very, very different from how mangas portray it now. Very militant, very traditional "for the family!"-mindset.

so... is Tanome dead as of volume 4? While it's nice that Shao Tsu is powerful enough to be on her own, it's weird that Tanome has effectively disappeared since the end of volume 3...
