AAAAHHHH I CAN'T LOOK AT CHISE'S EYES WITHOUT CRINGING ANYMORE AFTER THESE LAST TWO CHAPTERS!!
I haven't read this in so long, I forgot if Alice is male or female. ^_^"

Here's my guess as to what happens.

Chise successfully becomes immortal. She then comes across her brother/father, who surprising no one, is an/are immortal being(s). Bla bla whatever dramatic reasons, the father set out to become mortal to stay and help Chise and their mother, but things happen. Inadvertently, brother/father lose their emotion in the process of becoming more human or mortal or whatever. Cue Elias trying the same method to become mortal/more human. He fails, or gets interrupted with good timing. Chise and Elias have a dramatic reunion, and then suddenly surprise brother/father/'monster gone mortal' show up. Chise rebukes notElias, claims they are no longer human, and makes up with Elias with the whole "Even though you are still immortal, you have found emotion. In finding emotion you have become human". They make up, and they live happily ever after. Forever. Then they bang.

I'm so happy. It seems the anime will adapt all the way through chapter 41

> Have problem with supranatural creatures

> Never asking help from exorsist or whatever

Why ?

First off, it's doubtful any such thing exists. She wasn't haunted by demons, "just" evil fae. We don't even know if the church has any actual power, nor if hell and its demons exist as well. (Speculations about Cartaphilius being the Wandering Jew aside).

Secondly, they do note "leaving some energy to keep them outside", so while the family was working together, they (presumably Chise's mother) COULD keep them away from her house at least. The problem arose when she had to leave the house for extended periods of time to work. Being a single working mother with no relatives (we know they were ostracised by her mother's family, at least) or close friends to fall back on is hard work already without being haunted by monsters while working and trying to keep monsters away from your home and little daughter at the same time, it's no wonder Chika eventually snapped.

All that said, I can't help but suspect her temporary bout of madness was a product of otherwordly influence rather than her own sanity snapping. At least that's how that panel looks to me.

Spoiler

Note how the voiced suggestion seems to come from somewhere behind Chika, how she seems startled by it looking behind her, and the dark mist waving in the immediately next panel.

I like everyones theories! I can't agree that any are obvious or proven, but you've taken the facts and hints that the mangaka provided and have some solid ideas on what's going on. This chapter was an absolute mine of clues and mysteries.

Both parents and Chise have the sight, Chise and her mother Chika are like each other (this could mean Chika was also a Sleigh Beggy), and both father and baby Fumiki have an "energy" that keeps malicious spirits at bay, protecting the family. I have to wonder how much the parents told Chise about magic, and how much they truly knew about it all, considering Chise seemed to have been left in the dark all those years they were together. To me this could mean 1) they themselves knew very little, 2) they were waiting for Chise to get a little older before telling her, or 3) it was a secret that could not be told to her.

My theory?

Spoiler

It may also just be a managaka and/or scanlation typesetting mixup, but there's also a very interesting mixing of Chise's memory/thoughts and the memory/thoughts of her mother later in the chapter. Eyeball!Joseph tells Chise that her memory does not extend past the door her father passed when he left, so she cannot know what happened to him, and yet we see her mother going to work whilst Chise is presumably at home, or other such moments that don't seem to be part of Chise's memory. Chika appears to have thoughts and afterthought narration as the chapter goes on with how she's struggling to provide for herself and her daughter whilst also fighting off the malicious spirits, and these thoughts switch fonts. One such thought overlays Chise's memory of her father's back at the door the night he left, something Chika did not see, and yet it was used to tell Chika's thoughts. Why this change in perspective in the first place? Or are these Chise's thoughts, imagining what her mother was thinking as she struggled? Is it possible there's something foul at play here in her memory from eyball!Joseph? A sleigh beggy vision involving her mother's spirit? I'm not inclined to think it was a mistake when an editor could have caught it. Something's afoot!

Spoiler

no, he changed his mind because bringing her meant bringing the danger with him, making his leaving altogether pointless

Interesting that this completely retcons the anime's ova.

Does it? My memory is not that great but I don't see any retcon. The OVA takes place after the events of this chapter, but several years before Chise is propositioned to auction herself. I would argue the OVA does a very good job at impressing upon fans just how malicious the spirits of Japan are (not to say the spirits in England aren't either—as someone has said earlier, the fear of Elias' wrath protects Chise against all sort of spirits and magics, and so they may treat her more favorably because of this), and that makes this chapter so much more powerful knowing that Chika has gone through the same ordeal with Chise in tow all on their own.

wow this is going south faster than the African Conquest

She traded an arm and an eye to see her mother.

I was not prepared for this emotional roller coaster.  I knew there would be one, I just didn't think it would be kingda ka level.

Though now I kinda need to see how Chise's parents met each other.

God fucking damn that hurts...You can't do this to me manga. I was all ready to curse this bitch to dead and you show me this. What am I feeling now. Why................

pretty much thats what the tragedy tag was added for... like it or not, this manga is a nice pace of change after reading those isekai manga full of BS... and still a bit lighter than the "Deep Love" series... especially on deep love - ayu no monogatari... OOT, if you still hadn't enough, you can probably try narcissu 1st... the tragedy quite unbearable that made me cried at starbucks while reading the story on my laptop... also, left me depressed for a whole week... lol...

You both seem very confused. Chise never told Cartophilus to give her these visions, and it's obvious her father ran away.

Nope, not confused in the slightest.

Happy Christmas chapter!............. Not.

Exactly.. and here I thought it's Christmas mood until all hell breaks loose near the end of the chapter.. >>>:

Does anyone know the day that launches a new chapter? and I really think Elias will save her ...

Well, I don't know about Elias saving her just yet, but the new chapter comes out February 5th.

I always had the impression that Chise brother was the actual problem and not her, but now that you say that that could be it.

I'm just waiting for that happy reunion now, it seems things are turning towards a dark direction for Chise. Probably the next dark direction the mangaka will take will be for Elias, but we'll see ;c

Happy Christmas chapter!............. Not.

Because even exorcists know what they're doing is bullshit.

She probably didn't know any mages or people with actual knowledge.

From the chapter, it's obvious SHE is herself a person with actual knowledge, and was able to share it with her husband. She's also perfectly capable of defending herself, so at some point she must have been raised by people able to defend themselves AND her, who were also able to teach her to defend herself. She definitely knew exactly what she was. Her problem is literally explained in the chapter; can't work and keep the kid safe at the same time. That's really it. Sometimes the most mundane things are the source of the worst tragedy.

Also, mages would probably be an even worse threat than all the monsters combined, given what we know of them. Realistically, the main reason the mages have been so nice to Chise is because they're all scared shitless of Elias.

It seems pretty obvious that the dad

Holy hell what a chapter.

Honestly I'm terrified of where this is going, on top of already being worried about developments before.... Hopefully anxiously waiting to see something good for her come out of this and see issues resolved.
