I find these types of mangas absolutely disgusting, there are so many like this one and the message they are portraying towards young girls is absolutely terrible. "As long as its a hot guy, it doesn't matter what he does to you, whether he is pushy, abusive, rude". Half of that time, that girl was just thinking, "I'm not good enough for him", which is so annoying, Its girls like her that end up ruining their lives by some fuckboy and end up getting played every single time.

Oh man, I read the comments before reading the manga and was like well, let's read it anyway 'cuz I need to procrastinate. Even if this turns out to be deplorable.

...Turns out it's just your typical shoujo manga featuring your typical innocent female lead and your typical handsome boy with trauma who's changed by love by said typical female lead and then they begin their typical shoujo romance, complete with typical jealous ex's, bullies, and typical ETC drama. Typical Chiba Kozue.

Oh, did I mention it's typical?

I initially wrote a lot lot more regarding the whole offensive-portrayal-of-females-and-males conversation, but then I remembered what I just read.

I'm not offended by these portrayals at all, because I don't get the impression that Chiba is ever actually trying to portray things realistically. Or shoujo in general, for that matter. Character depth tends to be quite shallow all around, particularly for "background" characters. When characters lack depth I generally just don't take it seriously.

These stories and character portrayals do make me roll my eyes, though. And that's why when I find a diamond in the rough I latch onto it like a leech. Give it some extra gold stars in my reading list, draw some fanart, write some fanfiction, get all giddy and call it the best thing since cheese became a thing.

Grazie! ;)

if you like this whatever, if you don't whatever as well, I'm glad either way you feel some type of way because I don't and that's disappointing because everything about this seems so copy paste that I can't actually muster an opinion, a stance, anything resembling emotion or thought beyond 'this was ink on paper at some point'

Hmmm . . . well, it's hard to complain about it too much because there really are guys like that (some of them even get girls; WTF?).  I wish there weren't, but the world is what it is; it's hard for me to get up on my hind legs and say "That kind of thing is such a terrible, defamatory portrait of guys!  We're not really like that!" because, you know, who would I be kidding?  So these kinds of stories depress me, but I can't honestly claim I have the right to be offended by them.

Well, I know a bunch of girls who act like your typical shoujo lead. All they want from life is getting a guy and they find manly, macho (usually also oppressive), super jealous of his girl type of guys attractive as hell. Should we not complain about them because they exist in real life?

Welp, you just made my day with this comment, so thank you. xD
But as a female myself, I can freely say, NO. And if you go read around on MU for a bit, you'll find we are not alone in having this character trope piss us off, either. Though it is nice to have a guy say so too. I find that mostly it's women who complain about the typical, cliche A-hole male lead so many shoujo manga so enjoy flaunting about, so thank you for that, too.
I honestly have no idea how these creepy, rapey criminals are somehow put on a pedestal by stories aimed at the very group of people they are depicted as abusing. I find it much more enjoyable to read about a couple that actually seems to be in love than a girl who seems to have serious enough psychological issues as to enjoy being with her abusive boyfriend.
Though, now that I've answered your question on behalf of womankind, let me in turn ask the other half of the world's population a question: Is this type of thing offensive to you as well? I mean, it's obviously offensive to women to constantly be depicted as stupid, physically and emotionally weak little things who somehow enjoy being raped and/or otherwise abused by any handsome guy who comes along; But is it offensive to men as well? What with them constantly being depicted as disrespectful, abusive f**kballs who feel that they have permission to do whatever they want with any woman they are strong enough to pin down, I imagine it would be. But still, it'd be nice to get some feedback.
Most people are too busy complaining about the way the women are depicted to bother complaining about how shoujo manga views men.

I find it deeply offensive. You see a lot of abusive relationships glorified and justified in shojou. The problem I have with it is not only that I personally find abusive relationship repellent, but that these manga are aimed at young girls.

There are plenty of repressive messages aimed at young girls. The "It's okay if he is an abusive ass because he loves me" troupe is among the most offensive. It's a horrific message about love and relationships.

This is why most of my romantic fluff comes from yuri these days. More realistic relationships with troubles and drama, minus the abuse. Generally speaking.

To be honest, this manga QUITE passed my expectations. Assholes in (shoujo) manga can be real good or real bad. This one is neither, he really isn't much of an asshole by the time you reach the 3rd chapter. To top it off, his "player" nature is justified by his traumatic past, which means a lot to me.

Well, that kind of "unrealistic" stereotypes often pop up in your typical shounen too (especially if they combine Ecchi, Harem and Comedy).

Also, the fact that "these kind of guys" do get girls in the real world, is linked to the fact that deep inside, we're just animals. Seeking a mate with high alphaness and all that, you know.

I'd like to say that not all Chiba Kozue's stuff is like this.  I feel like her shorter stuff tends to be better than her longer stuff maybe, and some of her work is IMO really quite good.  But other stuff, even her most popular, I've just given up on.  I think maybe I won't even start this one.

notice me sempai xD

I guess it's irrelevant but... does the author know absolutely nothing about dogs? The female lead says she first saw the male lead three years previous, and in her memories he was carrying around a dog that was significantly smaller than it currently is - so, a puppy, right? In what world can a 3-4 year old dog be considered old? A plot device is a plot device is a plot device, but c'mon now.

Well, that cements it. I always suspected this was the case, but now I know for sure. The reason I always had poor luck with women when I was younger is because I wasn't a grabby, pushy, insensitive dickbag that just happened to be born with natural good looks. If only I had been a rapey fuckmonkey I could have had a harem.

Just how is this type of character still getting traction? I mean really? They STILL pop up in shoujo, despite this being 2014 and them being borderline criminals. So, question to you girls reading manga on this site. Do either of you get turned on by unwanted physical contact and having it assumed that you will put out as long as whoever is molesting you is a good looking guy? Does a guy with a pretty face literally have a standing green light to do whatever he wants?

No, I don't think most women would respond well to that kind of treatment. I know I would be in self-defense mode or screaming at the very least. I feel like the problem is that the definition of "handsome assertive male" is taken too far in shoujo manga. I like assertive, yes, but disrespectful and assertive? No. Good-looking, yes. Good-looking and an asshole, no.
