Coming back to this after two years, I can finally appreciate the ending. Like everyone else, I do wish there were more, but we should keep in mind that one of the hardest things to do in a story is knowing where to end it and I think the mangaka choose it pretty well. Now that I've had some time to step back from the initial feels I want to comment on the ending and the overall manga.

Some people seem upset about the 'romance tag'.

About Ishida and Shimada and Hirose:

Spoiler

The movie definitely didn't do the manga justice, but I do appreciate the medium since there is one main element that the manga does not have: sound.

Spoiler
Regardless of how we each feel about this manga, I think everyone can appreciate the message and the work the mangaka put into this.

Uh.. I read this coz I loved the movie but... holy shit the manga is a mess. The developments were chaotic and it didn't lead anywhere at all. I am having a hard time understanding people giving this a 5/5 when:

Spoiler

Damn, Kyoani.... you did well w/ the movie.

About the Romance tag,

Spoiler

After finally watching the movie today, I must say the movie really felt like a movie, and even though it was over 2 hours long, it felt as if the movie was long but interesting. It's been a long time that a non-action/non-horror film managed not to bore me even if it was long. And although there were a lot of artsiness-scenes/-cuts inbetween, I didn't mind it that much.

The manga is a little superior, though, because you get to understand the characters feelings more (feels a little more unrealistic, though,

Spoiler
).

All in all, even if the story is open-ended (basically every story that doesn't end with the destruction of earth or mankind is open-ended,though), I'd give the manga full 5 stars and 4,5 for the movie adaptation.

What happened to some missing chapter?

Watched the movie.  I have to say - the movie does this manga injustice.  I admit the manga is a little confusing, but in terms of covering all the themes and ideas that it covers, the movie is a far inferior product.

Personally, the movie completely skipping the entire "let's make a movie together" bit was a pretty bad idea.  It was the only reason why Ishida really got it all together when he returned to school, and the movie completely skips how each character had their own problems.  While it got the main ideas across, I can't really feel for any of the side-chars in the movie, and more importantly, why they would have any reason to support Ishida after being bad-mouthed that badly (whereas in the manga, this was reasoned thanks to Shouko's efforts to keep the 'movie' ongoing, and it was when the 'movie' was critically panned that Ishida realizes that, for better or for worse, they were not going to let themselves be bullied by anyone anymore - if people don't get them, then they will just forge their own path.)

There's only so much information you can put into a movie. I think they did great with the uhh... 'symbology' you could say

30 chapters in I distinctly notice something. Absent fathers.

I loved the device of the Xs...this manga is really stellar but it will be a long time before I can bring myself to read it again
Wait what? I thought this got licensed and was ditched on bato.to and removed so I maybe I unfollowed...
*shrugs*

I have no idea why the manga got butchered here, but you can find the complete story (and with a decent quality) at KissManga.

I think almost everyone already knows about their existence. It's a typical ripping site but at least they have a good reader (all manga is read manwha style / all pages per chapter on one page)

God dammit. I didn't come to batoto at 7AM in the morning after an all-nighter only to be hindered by onion-cutting ninjas :(

Yeah, I didn't like this special chapter. The conflictual behavior of her mother was represented way better in the actual manga, and she felt more sympathetic.

while many of you guys hated the mother I for once understand her not because of the extra chapter but being a parent is hard especially when you have two daughters and one of them is deaf its just reality portrayed in these manga, but yeah that's just my opinion I'm not trying to contradict anyone though

Still doesn't excuse her behavior, sadly. Sure she may have felt that way once but as the years went on her negative image took on a life of its own.

Nice to know the reasoning behind her mother's strictness =) doesn't excuse but at least it wasn't random

I liked the extra chapter. Although the actions of the mother in the series was not justifiable, at the very least, she thought of her daughter's best interest albeit in a wrong way. An afterstory chapter would be great

I'm the only one that didn't like the special at all?

The mother was a shit the whole series, there's no reasoning behind his behavior at all. The way she treated Shouko was worthy of some medical atention, It was senseless.

Couldn't be worst this special, it only reminded how much I hated that fucking asshole mother through the series, from the beginning to the end, and on top of that, It also reminded me of how special was Shouko's grandmother.

Fuck this shit.

This was one of the most difficult mangas that i have read in my life, even so I am glad to see have read and that someone translated this extra chapter for us, I dont think I'm going to read this again do to the never ending rollercoster of hard fells but if you didnt read it I recommend it fervently, one of the best mangas i've read  in my life and sincerelly I dont think that will be a manga that aboard a theme like this with the same prodigious story telling, props for the author and the scanlation teams.

It's raining in my bedroom

so much feel

Looks like it's really over now. Dammit.

Shouko's grandma was the best, definitely.

I feel... hungry, but not quite.

I thought this manga was done making me feel these things called emotions.
