FWIW, Kanade has 45 chapters in all, so there are another 31 to go.  In response to some others here, I would think that if the highly competitive Japanese market thought this series all that boring, it would not have survived for so many more chapters.  It's not Naruto, Oh My Goddess or Negima, but 45 monthly chapters is nothing to sneeze at.

Well, it's that season so I can't rule out sneezing at it.  But I'm fond of this manga.  Thanks for keeping it in your rotation!

Azumi seems to have her rituals crossed.  She wanted to do an exorcism, but actually recited a prayer which was the combination of two real life Shinto prayers, both involving the ritual cleansing of oneself from worldly impurities.  Well, I suppose an exorcism can be considered a spiritual cleansing...

That aside, with this volume the mangaka appears to finally be putting some meat on the bones of this story.

Thank you rpapo!! It was a nice chapter.

IT'S ALIVE! Thank you rpapo!

It hadn't died.  I was just working through my list in spite of summer chores.

Could only get through 3 chapters...
Quite honestly, these guardian spirits are annoying.
Especially the girl's spirit.

yep, he's tantrums gets old really fast ... the idea of the manga is good, but the story itself it's pretty bland

B O R I N G !

I want more

Thy wish shall be granted.

EDIT 2017-10-18: It took another two weeks...  That makes three volumes of nine done.

I want more

I couldn't quite say I "specialized in Shakespeare", but when I took my English degree I did concentrate almost entirely on 18th-century and earlier stuff, largely avoiding modern.  So I took my fair share of Shaksper, Chaucer, Malory, Beowulf and so on.  Geekest English Lit stuff I ever did was a course where we translated most of Beowulf from Old English--some of the hardest work I ever did, but great payoff.  Beowulf took on the monster that had been killing people unstoppably for ten years, rassled it barehanded (cuz swords bounced off), and ripped its arm off.  Anglo Saxon stories didn't play around.

The disappointing thing about Shakespearean English, actually, is that often just when you're wanting them to sound archaic is exactly when a real Elizabethan would sound just like a modern except for the accent.  So you're stuck either doing cheesy fake archaic or not making them any different.  Sometimes you can get around it with "older" vocabulary choices.

Ahem.  Feel free to run archaic speech by me.  By the way, just to air my pedantic cred, I should note that Shakespearean English is, in fact, technically modern English.  Middle English is much harder to understand (and sounds even weirder than it looks), and Old English is a completely different language closer related to, say, modern Icelandic than to modern English.

I'll have to keep that 'ahem' in mind, though frankly I suspected that you, of all the people here, would be the most likely to be well versed in the topic.  In any case, if you see errors, feel free to message me about them.  As a one man show in scanlation, corrections are easy for me to make.

Having read quite a few books about Tolkien and the history behind his books, I am well acquainted with the notion that Shakespearean English is modern in a linguistic sense.  Unfortunately, it isn't modern enough for some people these days.  One guy on another site was complaining of a headache from trying to read it.  I'm not that unaccustomed to it: between the Renaissance Faire and the King James Bible, I've had a fair amount of exposure to it.  I simply haven't taken classes on the subject, and so am not 100% sure as to when to use my thees and thous.

Interestingly, there is a resemblance with how familiar speech is constructed in Spanish, and so I lean on that a bit.

Additional rant: When I translate these chapters (Kanade, that is) I always do the translation into modern, non-dialectal English first.  Then to maintain consistency with the Village Idiot chapters, I review all of Hiren's and Jinrai's spoken lines and adjust them to an older style.  I feel comfortable doing this, as it does not carry any unfortunate stereotype baggage which would not apply in the Japanese context.  Some people like to translate Kansai (Osaka) dialect as if it were back-country English.  Unfortunately, that carries a stereotype that doesn't really apply to the inhabitants of Osaka.  So I don't try to do that.  There's a slight loss of the flavor of the original Japanese in doing things this way, but I'd rather not flub things up and leave people with the wrong impression.

Hiren and Jinrai, however, are supposed to sound like they had been brought forward in time several centuries.

I have attempted to do this more correctly in this chapter, but old English isn't modern English, so while we may understand it for the most part, composing and using it correctly is harder unless you happen to have specialized in Shakespeare in college.

thanx rpapo for your work and completing the good unfinished manga btw do you know why they dropped Tokyo Innocent there was only one volume left?

No clue.  I haven't talked with the Village Idiot people since I was working on Golden Time, three to four years ago.

I am beginning to see why the translator for Village Idiot insisted in trying to render the speech of both guardian spirits as Elizabethan or Shakespearean English.  Both Hiren and Jinrai speak in a rather antique fashion, and the written text uses kanji which in normal Japanese are rather obscure.  Or rather, kanji are used repeatedly in situations where in normal Japanese kana would be used instead.

I have attempted to do this more correctly in this chapter, but old English isn't modern English, so while we may understand it for the most part, composing and using it correctly is harder unless you happen to have specialized in Shakespeare in college.  And it may be hard even then.

And now the story gets deeper.  Lots of dark pages here.  And I leave you guys hanging by your fingernails.   Heh heh heh...

Well . . . hard to be in too huge of suspense in a flashback.  This is more filling in detail and characterization than new reveal so far, since we already know

Great story. Thanks, rpapo!

Oh... i think i read this in the past. It says 2013 was the date of the last chapter before a massive time gap. Nice to see this is being updated, hope it sticks

Had no idea this had been resurrected. Also no memory of the story either, so I suppose a re-skim is in order.

Anyhooz, thanks @ rpapo.

I've run out of patience after four weeks waiting.  If my friend has changes to make, the chapter will be updated.

Complaints, disputes, criticisms?  Just PM me.

This is actually really boring

By popular demand, around the end of March or early April you should see chapter 11, the completion of the onsen story.

UPDATE 2017/04/15: Chapter 11 has been "done" for a week now, but is awaiting the blessing of a particular person who actually speaks Japanese on a daily basis and asked for the chance to grade my work.

UPDATE 2017/05/02: If I don't get my graded paper back before I have chapter 12 ready (it's the fourth item out in my queue right now, so a couple of weeks), then I will simply do a double chapter release at that time, even though chapters 11 & 12 don't share any topic but Kanade.  Chapter 11 finishes the short onsen arc, and chapter 12 introduces some new back-story.

And some people wonder why I prefer to work alone...

I wish I could remember what was this about

What the!? I don't even remember following this. lol
