In before it gets axed because the MC isnt travelling around the fantasy world picking up girls with his OP video game [ skills written in retarded brackets ] while pretending to be a rookie adventurer.
the main theme aside, the manga is interesting. The character flawed personality aside, the story is engaging. The train of thought of the people in the series aside, the pairs of main character is better than many one dimensional in other isekai series.
I dont think the author is trying to romanticise Elizabeth at all. From the MC's POV, elizabeth is contradictory. She's a mass murderer, she loves killing and torturing people, but at the same time she acts like a normal girl sometimes. This isnt unusual, many serial killers and people like Hitler had friends and lovers.
The way human social relations works, most people do not care if their friend/family/etc treats others badly, as long as they aren't affected negatively by it. The stereotypical "spouse of a serial killer who insists that the killer isnt all that bad" is a good example, but in reality, many of us do something similar. How many of you have turned a blind eye to one of your friends being rude/abusive to someone else, simply because you weren't the one he was being rude to? Most people wouldn't risk losing a long term friendship simply because their friend was rude to a stranger or someone we regard as "less important".
Given the choice between friend A and friend B, most people choose the one they feel gives them the most "value". "Value" usually being "which person helps me more" or "which person do i enjoy spending time with more". I have had many friends pick someone else over me, despite the other person being a obsessive stalker with a past history of lying, cheating and stealing. They simply did not care what he did, as long as they weren't his victims. Sadly, most people are opportunistic and behave like this. They are not willing to stand up for what is right and tell their friends "stop beating up homeless people or we won't be friends anymore". They just turn a blind eye to things because it's the easiest course of action that gives them the most benefit.
Right now, Kaito is in a fucked up situation where he is completely reliant on Elizabeth to live. He doesnt want to get tortured obviously and he isn't in any hurry to commit suicide or he would have done so by now. Regardless of what Elizabeth did in the past, he wasnt even there for it and it had nothing to do with it anyway. He's just finding it hard to reconcile the stories he hears about Elizabeth with the girl he sees, it would like if you found out that some harmless looking kid was a mass murderer. All he can do is try to survive in this new world. In that sense, hes not even being opportunistic, he doesnt have any better option because its not like anyone else is offering to save him and give him a brand new life.

Well. I guess for a person whose first life was literally torture to the very end, she might start to look like an angel. Her bullying never ends up him being "truly hurt" seems bit humorous and her "kind or cute" moments turn even more dazzling. Shiro from Fate had tragic past but happy life and he was able to chase his naive justice, Kaito had hell for a life and he just died. This propably is going to end up as a tragedy anyway since they keep implying that she was the emperor whom she doesnt have to kill (as she was technically killed already).
If we want to give some logical reason why they didnt kill her in the first place, is that just capturing one demon costed the church so much (apparent from the sea of corpses in the flashback) it cant be even measured so to save lives they somehow put her to do the job. She is too prideful to just ditch the scene and do whatever she wants as to victor go the spoils and if she promised to do something, it would be disgraceful for "loser" to disagree.
Please don't compare this guy to Shirou. Shirou is the same person that killed million others in his pursuit of "justice". Literally one of the worst characters in fiction idolized by morons.

This. As annoying as the Heroines in these are, everything would be fine if the Male MC would just man up and tell them "It's my way or the highway, bitch!"
And that's why I treasure every asshole MC I can find, I may not be able to sympathize with them, but at least they won't put up with any bullshit from their women.

Well in my books this story is doing wayyyyy better than vast majority of japanese Isekai stories nowdays..
Protagonist isnt overpowered as fuck and doesnt posses some retarded bullshit skill or ability or item (unless that maid turns out to be walking Aircraft carrier) or what fucking ever which makes him on par with the gods in "long run".. and that long run is within one chapter and exactly one panel long because in that panel there is a scenery and a box saying -X years later-. Protagonist isnt the one dictating what happens.. he is just stuck with bat shit crazy woman with even more insane modus operandi and has to go with the flow. World isnt your cookie cutter stuff with happy elves, mermaids, bunny-cat-dog-fat-chick-chack races.. it seems a littlebit more grim and that hyperconvenience where everything falls on your lap was thrown out from the window.
Long story short.. good fresh air in the damn Isekai action genre. Thank you. Author and artist may or may not be newcomers, but no one becomes J.R.R Tolkien within year.
Yeah, there are all kinds of isekai stories with cooks, veterinarians, doctors etc.. but action genre has become this "good or bad alignment protagonist who is either overpowered from the get go, or has something which makes good as one".
I don't read anything with a Female MC unless it's a gender-bender because I can't relate at all, but for people who can enjoy a female MC, you might be right.
I do enjoy movies with female MCs though, like Underworld or Resident evil, not anything with teenybopper filth in it though, like the hunger games or twilight.
Because it would have been way more interesting if the MC was Elizabeth instead.
