So, after reading the much longer "Tale of thr Ubume" mystery series, the original version feels definitely lacking in comparison.

I understand these are "Traditional" horro rstories, but they are pretty badly done.

They all follow the same format : some random shit happens -> cliff hanger ending -> nothing gets resolved.

Perfect example : face in the paper screen. Random face appears, then stops appearing, the end. Lol wut?

This is literally "a skeleton popped out" -> "the skeleton dissapeared" -> "the end".

Anyone, literally anyone, can write a story where something happened followed by a cliff hanger ending. All you have to do is not finish it. What takes skill is how to wrap up the ending properly.

That's how it's supposed to be.

Man, Sugiura sensei didn't write anything. She's just drawing urban legends as they are told. For example:

Someone gets lost in the forest > eats human flesh > becomes a wendigo. The end.

These aren't really horror stories as much as they are folk tales from different parts of Japan.

This is a collection of the strange things that have happened and not all things have a good or clean explanation for why it happened.

It is not a fair assessment to say the author does not have the skill to give a proper ending when it is simply a gathering of what amounts to old Japanese urban legends. Urban legends do not need an ending to entertain the audience it is being told to.

Hmmm... trope inversion. Usually in Western societies there's the myth of the Oriental mystic with his secret methods. Here the Japanese instead have an Occidental "captain" with his. What is really funny is that his magic fits exactly the description of the Indian water mirror found in British stories of the genre. As an aside, kapitan is a borrowed word that's fallen out of use in modern Japanese. It originally meant a Western dignitary, not necessarily a ship captain. Basically, the initial Western arrivals in Japan were Portuguese who of course came in ships and were led by captains, and that term soon came to mean any Western leader. Dejima was the artificial island just off Nagasaki handed over by the Tokugawa Shogunate to the Dutch as a segregated trading post. It was initially built for and occupied by the Portuguese.
