I can see why some people are confused though

maybe the manga-ka decided to have a bit of fun with their readers and deliberately left us confused about Hikaru-chan's actual gender ^^

I think I've seen that.Even though I can't remember from where, I -can- say that you're probably not imagining it.

Same as Hideyoshi in "Baka to test":
Even if proof were to be given to confirm him as a guy, Hikaru will still be considered as an in-between. Neither a full-fledged guy or a girl.

wouldn't mind a bit more of this. would have been interesting to see a reaction if it was discovered that he ran out on a sure thing with a chick that could be a model, all for hikaru :|.

Hikaru is better as a guy.
But I guess that's just my personal preference; he (she) could easily be a girl crossdressing as a guy crossdressing as a girl. Wouldn't be the first time I've seen that. In fact, I think I've seen a guy crossdressing as a girl crossdressing as a guy crossdressing as a girl, but I might just be imagining that one.
