Site's dead, this is the last manga updated on my follow list. So here I am to make my last comment here...

Looks like we won't be able to see Gintama ending together here. 

 

Too bad that we're already in the really serious arc. If not, gorilla-sensei could've made some joke about chapter 666 with Gintoki powering up with a simple "Releasing the 666th restriction, deploying the dimensional interferencing imaginary magic circle, connecting the Idea Engine, BlazBlue, activation!"

It's a last ditch all-or-nothing battle, because if the three of them fall here so do all of their friends and acquaintances letting themselves be consumed by the still-struggling Inugami. They've come this far and finally given Utsuro pause (only time he did this was against Baldy on the other planet) so they'll need to finish the job with what little they have left in the tank.

 

What are the odds this series ends on a nice easy-to-remember number like 700? 750? (That's a stretch).

Utsuro going for the "WHY?" monologue, next comes the villainous breakdown and him trying to pull some shit.

Why did you go down this route, Sorachi, why? Fucking hell, the past few chapters, constantly destroying all "hope", but I still believed you had a real answer to defeating Utsuro. That you wouldn't result to the bullshit nakama trope. This entire climax was perfect! But this fucking chapter, man... Why are you insulting our intelligence? You, of all people.

I disagree. If there's an action shounen that gets my support for going full FRIENDSHIP, EFFORT and VICTORY, it's Gintama. What makes Gintama work so well as a manga is in fact because, in a way, it actually understands action shounen better than its peers. See, part of my complain about mediocre battle manga is that they tend to just go from one battle arc to another, with little attempts to add depths to the characters beyond some basic characteristics. Gintama sets things apart by focusing on more comedic moments. Said comedic moments may seem shallow and simplistic, but when you put them all together, what you get is that you end up liking the characters more, so when a serious arc happens, you become more involved and the fights become more engaging.

But that's not all; this is where the other side of the equation comes in: parody. See, lesser parody series only knows how to reference a work. There is no deeper meaning beyond you recognizing the references (e.g. Nyaruko, Seitokai no Ichizon). Gintama goes beyond that: it's not enough to have watched the anime to get the references, but that there tend to be another layer to the joke beyond mere recognition of the references. The Popularity Poll arc is the best example of that. So, where does this lead us? Well, it's like movies like Airplane! became a classic while the likes of Epic Movie gets forgotten. A good parody isn't just about mocking or subverting a trend, it's also embracing the characteristic of the thing it's parodying. The best parodies are hence also the works that love the genre or medium the most. So really, after all the shenanigans and hijinks that defy common action shounen, I find it most appropriate that in the end, Gintam chose to go sheer over the top with one of the biggest cliche, no, foundation of action shounen: Friendship, Effort and Victory. By the end of day, despite all the constant jabs at Jump, Gintoki is a fan of Jump and I don't think it's outrageous to extend that to the author himself. All the jabs are not out of maliciousness, but more akin to banter made with a familiar friend. That's why Nakama Power actually works, because we're practically going full circle.

Oh shit, we're at chapter 666 already?

And we finally hit the devil's number for this series. Truly makes you think how stubborn we humans can be and how an immortal like Utsuro can be scared of us.

There was always going to be some sort of "working together" will bring down Utsuro. It wasn't going to be any different. That's on you, and some of the other fans complaining about this, for forgetting that at the end of the day, Gintama was a shounen series and will still use common shounen tropes mostly straight.

 

Really, I'm a little curious as to why there is complaining (and with some bordering on whining) about it?

Working together =/= "Muh Spirit! Our Spirit!"

 

Do you remember the Housen fight? Gintoki, overpowered completely & absolutely. Still won, by working together and capitalising on his weakness. 

 

To analogise that climax with this chapter, it would be along the lines of: the Hyakka, led by Tsukki, stand up together and collectively their spirits burn as hot as the sun, thus weakening Housen.

I guess the souls of every manga author get drained after chapter 600. All this time, Utsuro wanting the world of Gintama to end was just Sorachi channeling his desperation into the manga through the antagonist.

Police of Japan, I want to report Sorachi for animal cruelty and mass murder.

The nuclear option with the sisters returning just in time to transfer power. Those three still have to kill Utsuro once more or everyone is guaranteed to die by the end.

Utsuro is a perfectly good example of why you never tell someone to ''kill yourself''
