Genshiken Nidaime - The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture II

What saddens me somewhat is that the final tankobon/ volume collection has (like all previous "tanks") "volume extra" pages in it. Volume 21's extras have never surfaced as scanlations. Can't remember if vol 20's have either.

Interest fades after the series ends but we have yet to see the absolute last of Genshiken Nidaime.

I dropped this manga in the beginning of the harem arc, it was too much after dozens of chapters about trap-guy, but maybe i will read it again now.

Genshiken is life.

I'll second that.  A whole new influx of misfits and oddballs, yea!  The first series had a lot of interaction between the other clubs and Genshiken. The primary reason for the club's existence was it wasn't just Manga, it wasn't just Anime. It embraced the Otaku culture without regards to method. Thus Cosplay, models/figurines and such was also included.

This second series seemed more introspective of the "Rotten" sub-culture and lost it's rounded appeal.  I would like to see what attempts will be made to incorporate the other otaku sub-cultures in the future or is it a case of once rotten remains rotten. It would be amusing if the first president returns as an instructor and club adviser. 

 The Madarame X Sue (or is it Sue X Madarame) pairing was one of my favorite since the first series when she gave him the Inuyasha "Sit" command so she could climb up on his shoulders. Would like to see how their relationship develops. Also, I'd love to find out if Kugapi (my avatar) and the hostess he is seeing end up dating.

Madarame harem arc was a little too dragged out and I still prefer the first generation, but even so, it had been a nice ride.

And even at the end of it I don't get all those references(except for one from last gundam). Hardcore till the end.

That was only about a volume's worth of dragging though.

Bit of a shame that Sue & Mada didn't get as much after-the-fact attention as Sasa & Ogi did but a great and funny series non-the-less

This was really dragged out, full of flaws and the first was better for sure. But it feels like something has endend inside me as well....

well, this was good. it was good whille it lasted, but i am also glad it ended on a good note before it got out of hand(it was getting there really easilly). i just hope to see some stuff like it eventually, because series like this and welcome to nhk are very much missing.....

Listening to Nils Petter Molvaer - "Phum" and it fits perfectly.

I really wanted to grow into a Genshiken circle but heck, times truly changed. I mean, all the series are like K-on. It was funny first 230 times but now it's girl talk/idol genres. And all the series are girls doing all the roles: army, fighting, being rpg hero, car mechanic... It's huge fetish culture, it's pinnacle of moe and idols. There aren't any more Lynn Minmay's supporting their hero pilots, now the girl-idols fly valkyries. There aren't any strict girls acting cold towards male lead, now it's an angry female character. There are vocaloids, some robots in space and 3D porn to emulate doujinshi comic books.
Screw zombie apocalypse, it's happening. Otaku is not only accepted in Japan, it's a common thing in the western world too. There are anime references on the CN shows and in the French band desinee, there's the whole generation of kids living the Scott Pilgrim life.

It may sound weird, but it's a huge minus of multiculti nowadays. I love and hate how easy it is to blend the line of Asian and European/American cultures. And Genshiken coming to an end is just so wrong despite being it so good. OP delivered. We got the most wanted ending and what? I feel left and empty man.

Having to know your beloved series is coming to an end is like seeing your family member dying. That's the old otaku way for me. And I'm not really that old but maybe already that old of an otaku. last twenties for me and Genshiken is over.

My god, I'm so mad, happy, angry and sad now. This is truly a climax I wasn't expecting.

Just wanted to say, I love Nils Petter Molvaer, so I consider you a person of fine taste (that, and you liking Genshiken of course)!

I empathise with you in regards to the end of Genshiken, this manga meant so much to me. I am conflicted, between a sadness for something I love coming to an end, and being so happy that a manga could possibly affect me in such a way. I do hope for more Genshiken, although I feel positive that Kio is leaving the door open enough for him to potentially return to the club room in the near future, there's still much he can do with these characters, and I really hope he returns to them (to be frank, I want more Yoshitake, dammit!) 

Kio already established that one major reason Genshiken was ending (and why the Rame harem took center stage) was because otaku culture had evolved significantly since the time of the original Genshiken run. The manga team simply couldn't keep up with the culture and make a relevant and believable Genshiken anymore. You can see that in the total lack of Madarame's discussions, because that's just not how Japanese otaku behave anymore. Nowadays otaku go to Akiba more for the figures and collectibles rather than the manga, and discussions like Madarame used to trigger are now more likely to happen in chat groups or NND. Most damning of all, otaku circles today are also more creative and work in multimedia formats, prosumers rather than consumers (although to be fair the current Genshiken tried to go there too with their doujin). Also, the Genshiken group is strangely tech-averse compared to current real-life otaku who basically live in the net. Kio's team is somewhat similar in their "backwardness", which may be a major factor in why they can't keep up. The only place where Genshiken is up-to-date is in the manga and anime references.

 

There probably won't be a 3rd Genshiken run, although a "real" Spotted Flower dealing with the main continuity post-Genshiken couples might work.

Disclaimer: I'm a 90s otaku like the Genshiken and the changes ARE hard to keep up with. You young'uns are moving too fast for us old geezers... Nowadays I just look in from outside and study the trends rather than participate directly. The most up-to-date I got was in becoming a Kancolle player, and that's quickly moving out of fad as well.

Ouch !!! of all the comments here, this one makes my heart sink the most. I don't wish to give the wrong impression, but from whence comes that info about the team finding it hard to keep up with current media-mix otaku culture? Was it the last interview?

To me, it looked like Kio-sensei was having a bit of trouble keeping up with current or even quasi-2006 fujoshi culture - unlike western slash fen, fujoshi were and are notoriously secretive. They don't like attention. 

If you shake much of the loathing from the complaints of fanboys who hated the second generation because it was 'all fujo shyte" and "that &(&$*& "trap"", you find one valid complaint - the range of fan activities was significantly more limited in the "rotten" genshiken, even as they were far more productive. But other manga/ anime examples of realistic female fandom are impossible to find. Closest I've found is watamote - but she is a solitary consumer.

In other words, i betcha the ****hurt fanboys would have sucked it up Hato and all if the Genshiken had provided more "real-life fujoshi fanning secrets REVEALED !!!!" 

I harbor two ridiculous alternative theories about the end of Nidaime. 1) Kio was miffed there wasn't more doujins and fic about the Genshiken (you didn't do this in memory of...) and that a 3rd generation could jump a decade, with a new cast, allowing more current fan practice and references, as well as cameo visits by the alumni who may or may not be in the spotted-verse. 

But if Kio feels too oyagi to keep up with the fandom, what is left? (Sigh!)
