They sell mediocre quality coffee that tastes fine when it's just espresso drowned in lots of milk and sweet flavor syrups, which is their main thing anyway. You don't go to starbucks for real coffee drinks. Hell I don't go to any chain for a real latte (or heaven forbid you want a real macchiato instead of a slightly stronger latte).
If I want good coffee I go to one of a few local places that actually make coffee drinks. If I want a tasty sugar bomb I'll go to a chain. It's apples and oranges really, they're not even the same thing. It's like getting mad that burgers at mcdonalds aren't the same as ones you'd make yourself or get from a sit down restaurant. They're completely different.
That being said, there's no reason to be a snob about it. The atmosphere really is different, and sometimes it can be nice to lounge around using their free wifi and enjoying your sugary drink.
