Description: | Shinichi Kudo is a high school student who, by using observation and deduction, is good at solving mysteries. While investigating one, he is caught by the criminals that he was watching and forced to take an experimental drug. Leaving him for dead, the criminals disappear. Instead of killing him, however, the drug turns Shinichi into a little kid. To preserve the illusion of his 'disappearance', Shinichi adopts a new name based on his favorite author (Arthur Conan Doyle) and becomes Conan Edogawa. Ran, his (actually Shinichi's) childhood friend takes this little boy under her wing and brings him to her home. Conan now lives at a detective agency run by Ran's father, but his mind is as keen as ever and he continues to solve mysteries... always allowing Ran's father to take all the credit. As far as everyone's concerned, Conan is just a little kid anyway... even to Ran. This is *extremely* frustrating to Conan since nobody will listen to a 'little boy'. In spite of this, Conan has a mission... to find the criminals who did this to him and get the antidote to that drug. |

Batoto Closure and Plans for the Future

Batoto Move
For those not in the know, Batoto has announced that it will be shutting down permanently. We're currently in talks to start uploading on other sites, but since Batoto might be spotty from now on, we suggest that anyone who wants to ensure that they will retain access to the latest chapter join the DC EN discord, as that's where BSI and Korn Scans post scans and related news.
Not really news. Many of us talk ad inifinitum about Akemi's death and words, plus the crow motif has been carried even now with Nanatsu no Ko. Though typically translated as "Seven Children" in DC, the more common English translation is "Seven Baby Crows" since the song is about a mother crow and her seven children, to say nothing of the fact that it was the appearance of a crow outside of Poirot that served as the precursor to the hospital battle and the culmination of Eisuke's story. On top of that, the reason Gin, Vodka, and Tequila were dressed in black formal wear with black fedoras was also crow related - the fedora is the beak, and the back vent of formal wear (where tight, formal jackets part in the back for the sake of movement) is like a bird's tail feathers (so much so that a mere elongation of this fabric around the back vent is called a "Tailcoat") with Gin's back vented trench coat in particular behaving like a bird's tail. It's only been dropped because we're typically around lower level agents these days; Gin, Vodka, and Tequila all operate as either leaders well outside the hot zone or silver tongues carrying out deals, implying they're high level agents (the latter, when combined with his mentality and mannerisms, also implying Vodka is a former Yakuza). And if we venture beyond the canon, the DCTP fan-sub of the 13th movie also played off of this and its heavy BO involvement with the title Raven Chaser; besides basic conflation of the two creatures many people make, both "crow" and "raven" are "karasu" (烏) in Japanese. (Officially though, the title uses 漆黒 which is "jet black.") The crow motif is not new, nor is it only present in that one moment.
In fact, some of us did consider The Sunset Manor case to be connected to the BO at first. A cloak and dagger invitation, crow emblems everywhere, and an obvious crime scene. However, all of us dismissed it when we learned it was a KID case, accepted that Karasuma was dead, and assumed that a BO member wouldn't have allowed his things to have been stolen or his guests murdered so easily. For us, this revelation was more of a kick in the groin than a mind-blow - a reminder that we shouldn't believe everything we're told, especially in a mystery series.
Decided to give this a re-read, b/c hiatus, and lo and behold chapter 16, page 18 bottom left panel.
it is though
re-read the corner of page 17, it directly states that we have learned the boss' name
Not the boss name, just someone really influential within BO. He at least have been implied to be the BO's biggest "sponsor". I mean, back at chapter 301-ish this Karasuma guy have a whole manor made from gold as a hidden treasure.
Is Carasuma really the Boss' name? Or just another BO member's ?
was re-reading chapter 301 when i came across that piano message "karasuma will kill even though trump card to decipher", the fact that it's very poorly translated speaks for itself, i took a look at the original and what it actually says is "i was killed by karasuma, i finally got my hands on the decryption trump card"

HOLY
FUCKING
SHIT
I agree Gin will probably be the "real" final opponent. But I do think we're entering the end game. Why? Because the danger for Conan is now at an all-time high. We know that the BO is now re-investigating Shinichi's death, and on top of that, Yukiko and Yusaku are now entering the story full-time BECAUSE it's so dangerous.
I expect a few filler cases, of course, but this all feels like we're setting up for the real end game. Even if the current arc only deals with Rum, Rum seems to be a bigger player than anyone else we've seen from the BO so far. I get the impression he's basically the boss's representative to the lower rungs, so I have a feeling his downfall will trigger a HUGE domino effect on the plot and kickstart the end.
On an external note, Aoyama's been at this for over 20 years, and he's currently going on hiatus for health reasons. Chances are he feels like it's time to finally bring this to a proper end. He's not immortal after all, and depending on whatever health issues he has I don't think he wants to risk leaving fans forever wondering about the resolution.
Man, when it said at the beginning that's it's "The biggest must read chapter in all of Conan history", I had some serious doubts and the further along the chapter I got, the more those doubts were confirmed but then that huge bomb just suddenly got dropped so casually.
To be honest, I expected the reveal of the Boss' name bit different, was funny seeing Shinichi getting schooled for a change though.
Well, it could still be that there's some more twists waiting and this isn't actually the real boss or not the boss anymore or who knows what else.
As for whether the manga is finally entering the final stages, I wouldn't be so sure about that. This seems more like it will simply conclude the current arc involving Rum and all the other things around it like Amuro, Sera etc. and then go back to the usual stuff while very slowly building up a new arc, like it always does after a major climax.
I guess it could be that the next big climax after this one will actually be about the boss, though even if that were the case, I don't think it'd be over yet. I always thought that the real "final opponent" that Shinichi will have to face is going to be Gin, even if he isn't the boss of the Black Organisation. It started with him and it will end with him, I'm sure.
More critically, Aoyama is wrapping this up quickly. In addition to his own health concerns, his friend and fellow mangaka George Morikawa is also ill and recently suggested he's going to have end Hajime no Ippo prematurely as a result. Given that Morikawa is three years younger than Aoyama, Morikawa's health issues are a wake-up call for Aoyama. On top of that, Aoyama said he wanted to end DC before he was as old as Agasa. He's now older than Agasa. It's why almost every case recently has either involved a BO plot element (be it arc or suspect) or one of the relationships. Besides being why the cases are suffering these days, it's also probably why his health is a concern.
> Medical treatment
Well fuck.... Don't die on us Gosho. Magic Kaitou isn't finished either!!!
Holy carp. Actual big plot advancement. Never thought I would see the day.
And some people say the plot never advances... pfah!
I just saw this, and I just have to say that "Civilian Kid" sounds like a really lame superhero.
Normally I'd assume so too, but he just revealed the Big Boss's name, and the BO has a confirmed interest in Shinichi now. Seeing as Aoyama is going on a long hiatus for health reasons, chances are he wants to wrap up this story once and for all, too. I expect a few DB cases, but I think it's seriously hitting the end game.
Nah, it'll probably be another 500 chapters till the next advancement. We'll see more detective kids stuff after this one, most likely.
Holy... This really IS getting close to the end!!!!
Dang. The hiatus is fine by me, at this point I think we can safely expect some of the actual plot when it comes back.
Indeed it was, it was such a long time ago that no one probably thought much of it, its in chapter 30.
Oops, i forgot how fickle mass media can be, lol.
And as expected, this marks the beginning of another intense arc featuring BO.
Is Carasuma's name ever mentioned somewhen else before?
Get well soon, author Aoyama-sensei!
Exactly what I've been wondering. That "drinking bird" is one of the first scientific toys you get in contact with if you're even only vaguely interested in science. Not to mention when your parents actually work in that world. A few ten-or-so years ago you could even see it on every office desk, it was just one of those gadgets everyone had to have. So why does a great scientist like Haibara not know how it works or recognize its law?
