Are you thinking of Simply Good Taste for a Duke's Daughter? It doesn't fit exactly what you've described, but it's the closest I can think of.

Don't know for sure, wasn't that interested. But I think not that one but another with simillar premise.

Until it turns out "general magic" isn't magic in general, but rather magic of the general rank, which commands all other magic!

...Well, that was only meant as a joke but it's actually a really cool concept when you think about it. Like the whole "I'm a mage that specializes in nullifying other mages" idea, but instead of counterspelling or nullifying magic you take control of other spells once they're already cast by using specific commands.

Telling a fireball to stop or change direction would be a simple "general" spell. Something like targeting a specific person would be a harder command to give. Even if the spell would usually be homing or targeted already, you're giving it new "orders" that overwrite its basic logic so you have to expend the same amount of effort you would to give the same command to any other spell.

One of those fun little equalizers where the niche mage is equally dangerous to low or high powered casters because of the ability to hijack spells, but is also equally susceptible to anyone - regardless of strength - who might be able to outsmart or overwhelm their ability to give orders.

And that would work great with support for other casters too: let the warlock focus solely on putting all his power into a big ball of murder, then use your strongest spell to order the murderball to break apart and rain over the enemy army.

Wich reminds me of countless stories that would've actually benefited from not being "in another world", i.e. the changes from hero being from Japan is superficial - or just self-indulgence from author's side. Yay, people with black eyes and hair are so great, girls dig it, they know what's best, they are chosen.

Wouldn't really work because you'd lose the "in another world" aspect of the character.
