I don'tget it why everybody supports male rivals than the male lead and especially in this story! Marui even though he knows mio has a boyfriend but he keeps advajncing on her. How can this make him better than the male lead taki!

Yes, I do think female love rivals are often hated on unjustly.  But some are hated on justly.  And I don't like this one.  It's the manipulation that makes the difference.

In Ao Haru Ride you get a nice love rivalry between good friends for a while, and it's cute the way they're all "We're both gonna try for him but we're not going to stop loving each other".

 

Meanwhile, I liked this chapter.

We don't know that the drama with her is over yet though - but I can see it could've been dragged over a hundred chapters XD

You have a point when you compare Marui to... let's say Hatano. Both are rivals to the mc but we root for Marui and hate Hatano. Rather than being the character's fault, the writing gives more development to Marui and makes us sympathize with his situation. In contrast, We don't know anything about Hatano's motivations so she comes across as being conniving. Not only that, Hatano manipulates people to get what she wants. It perpetuates a bad stereotype with female rivals. I don't think it's strange for readers to sympathize with the male rival compared to the female rival because well, that's how it is written. 

You're right about this happening more to female rivals than male rivals (especially in shoujo). The only exception would probably be if the rivals were originally friends.

Try reading the manga True Love, there's nothing wrong with the love rival in that and females hate her for no reason even if she did nothing.  I can't stand the sexist double-standard of supporting a male and return hurl the B-word toward a female doing the same thing.  It's unreasonable and no excuse.

It's funny how female readers can feel sorry for Marui(male rival), but if it was a girl in Marui's position in this story, she would have been torched on this board.

I read many comments where female readers are harsh against female rivals and support male rivals.

My take on this story is Marui is a d-bag.  He know that is Taki's girlfriend and still trying to pursue her.  His missed his chance back in middle school and I see him as a coward to try and ruin her relationship with someone.
