That may have to do with the way a man's wife/bride was treated in old Japan: as an addition to the man's family, and assistant or servant to the man's mother.
BTW, I have it on good authority that a new chapter of Nagasarete Airantou is on its way, probably in less than a week.
Probably used as 'title' during conversation especially for people outside the family, much like how some couple will call each other with "okaa-san" (mother) and "otou-san" (father)
Since in Japanese there's more variations in how you call someone as well as the implied relationship between the people doing so.
Even with the same word, like say mother, whether you uses haha-ue, haha, kaa-san, okaa-san, etc will have different deeper meaning to it.
And it's one of the narrative tool available to show changes, by switching the way you call someone.
In romance stories, it's when the couple decides to call each other by their first name.
I see from Google Translate that Bride and Daughter-in-law have the same kanji and reading.. now that's weird, isn't it.. I wonder how it came to be...

I like how both of the mangaka's mangas are set in the same world. You always end up learning background info of one manga in the other one.
