I do wonder though, just what does the Human part of the mecha even do? As Alice shows us Buster Dresses can function just fine with just AI. When it was just Haruto he couldn't even aim a gun properly. How is being a "hybrid" better than just an AI?

Think of it not as "man and machine" but more "pilot and copilot". With a more rigid definition of duties, I might call it pilot and weapons officer or pilot and ECM tech. Were I a raging Transformers nerd(I am), I might point to the targetmasters and headmasters.

 

The two together can cover each other's weaknesses and reinforce their strengths.

Gunhawk on his own would not be as effective as he is with Haruto.

Or possibly the AIs are intentionally designed to be ineffective without a pilot, precisely to prevent the robot uprising scenario that is playing out currently. But that would be machine-racist.

When I first saw the Robot-head profile, I thought this was a Gundam iteration of some sort...

Day 21: Still no mecha sized dresses. Morale is falling, but I remain steadfast. There is still hope. On a serious note, I half expect that "that way" Gunhawk alludes to at the end of chapter seven is him just holding the bloody arm steady: likely with his other arm.

That was some great mecha action. Haven't seen that in manga form in a while.

Hm Gunhawk is a lot cooler/more unique than I first thought. When he was holding back it looked like Gunhawk was just a generic arms using fire support mech. He really has a ton of options with that many usable limbs. By themselves they are dexterous enough to dismantle/repair other mechs/himself, but you can equip anything from Guns to melee weapons on each of them. Now he gets a laser arm too. Can't wait to see what they can do now.
