The longer you read the series, the more powerful it gets. Words alone can't do it justice. The first few deaths make you feel a little sad for the victim, but as it goes on the deaths become much more emotional. And what's really amazing is you don't get a full look at the characters outside their personal arc. You get glimpses of their lives, but it doesn't depend on the reader's attachment to make us care about their deaths like with most stories. It focuses on their final moments before death, and their relations with the people around them. Two deaths in a row had me sobbing at my laptop at one in the morning, trying not to cry too loud and wake up my parents.
If you've only watched the anime, read this. Just looking at the descriptions on Wikipedia, the anime completely changed some of the most powerful deaths of all. It didn't do those characters the proper justice they deserved. My main regret is that I'd read the summary of this manga on Wikipedia years ago, so I already knew some of the fates and twists. It makes me wonder how people felt reading this manga when it first came out...
Just finished Bokurano. This is an absolutely amazing series, and it manages to pull off its ending wonderfully. Definitely recommend reading it if you're on the fence.
The new Dung Beetle is
Yoko brings up that Dung Beetle says people have souls. I assume the new one is just Ushiro's soul in a Dung Beetle body (it could be that old military guy though).
As for the anime, it's pretty radically different from the manga after the first half. Different pilot order, entirely different central focus, different rules for battles, and most of the characters end up developing differently (Ushiro and Dung Beetle end up not being nearly as likable).
If you like manga this is definitely a masterpiece, with awesome story. I believe this was also made into an anime, but don't quote me on that since i don't watch anime. But, I do wonder who the new "dung beetle" is at the end of the story. I don't believe they quite explain who it is, but I get the feeling they left some hint, but I definitely didn't catch it.
A straight ending to a straight story. No surprises or unpredictable plot twists. The author told us exactly what was going to happen from the first few chapters and never went back on it. It's an incredibly sobering manga.
wow what are u guys saying,i thought it really had a sad ending based on all of your comments but in my opinion,that ending is just perfect,everyone managed to grow some balls except one of them.
so don't get me wrong its very good at what it do, its just not my type of story.
