Description: In a summer vacation, a group of 15 children discovered a mysterious man living in a seashore cave, along with his high-tech gadgets. The man claimed to be a game developer creating a video game with a giant robot defending Earth from 15 alien invaders, and asked those children to test the game for him. The kids agreed happily at first, but soon they began to find the game horrifying, not only because of its realism but also because the first fatality among them happened right after their first victory. Worse yet, they had no idea how to stop or leave the "game."

This is one of the most thoughtful and introspective manga I've come across. Every death has impact and makes readers thinks about their own life . Other manga like akame ga kill will use death poorly in an attempt to be edgy but bokurano is just heart breaking yet beautiful.

The longer you read the series, the more powerful it gets. Words alone can't do it justice. The first few deaths make you feel a little sad for the victim, but as it goes on the deaths become much more emotional. And what's really amazing is you don't get a full look at the characters outside their personal arc. You get glimpses of their lives, but it doesn't depend on the reader's attachment to make us care about their deaths like with most stories. It focuses on their final moments before death, and their relations with the people around them. Two deaths in a row had me sobbing at my laptop at one in the morning, trying not to cry too loud and wake up my parents.

If you've only watched the anime, read this. Just looking at the descriptions on Wikipedia, the anime completely changed some of the most powerful deaths of all. It didn't do those characters the proper justice they deserved. My main regret is that I'd read the summary of this manga on Wikipedia years ago, so I already knew some of the fates and twists. It makes me wonder how people felt reading this manga when it first came out...

I came here expecting power ranger mecha fighting.....
I can't remember when I last read a manga this powerful.

Just finished Bokurano. This is an absolutely amazing series, and it manages to pull off its ending wonderfully. Definitely recommend reading it if you're on the fence.

Yoko brings up that Dung Beetle says people have souls. I assume the new one is just Ushiro's soul in a Dung Beetle body (it could be that old military guy though).
As for the anime, it's pretty radically different from the manga after the first half. Different pilot order, entirely different central focus, different rules for battles, and most of the characters end up developing differently (Ushiro and Dung Beetle end up not being nearly as likable).

The new Dung Beetle is

Spoiler
. Check the hair / tone of voice.

If you like manga this is definitely a masterpiece, with awesome story. I believe this was also made into an anime, but don't quote me on that since i don't watch anime. But, I do wonder who the new "dung beetle" is at the end of the story. I don't believe they quite explain who it is, but I get the feeling they left some hint, but I definitely didn't catch it.

A straight ending to a straight story. No surprises or unpredictable plot twists. The author told us exactly what was going to happen from the first few chapters and never went back on it. It's an incredibly sobering manga.

wow what are u guys saying,i thought it really had a sad ending based on all of your comments but  in my opinion, that  ending is just perfect, everyone managed to grow some balls except one of them.

i just finished reading BOKURANO and i have to say right away that is a marterpiece on it's genre, the story was amazing and sad too, but one thing is for sure it was not that type of story with a happy ending and that was what i like it
This series is absolutely amazing. And it's up there high on the list of saddest things I've ever seen/read.
This series needs more readers, its really good, been quite a while since I've last finish reading this.
Since I'm a huge tragedy fan this is my fave manga. Haha.
I'm still not sure how I feel about this manga.
A well thought out work. One that is worth a read, if you can stomach the tragedy.
amazing.
Yeah, it was really sad and messed up at parts. However, i guess its rich and full in its theme of cruelty and is a true tragedy story. It's a good read.
dont know what to say....
Well said, this is a manga about cruelty, the cruelty of life itself. It's an hyperbole of it and because of that the story is a metaphor full of meaning. Even ignoring that it's an intriguing sci-fi story.
darn this series is cruel, reading this is like chugging barbed wire, if you like that kind of stories that shove it in your face how hopeless everything is then this is your read.

so don't get me wrong its very good at what it do, its just not my type of story.
