Between Summer & Fall

Well, that was abrupt, but I liked it. Maybe it's because it's been long enough since the last update that I kinda forgot about the brother, but I appreciate that the misunderstandings didn't get dragged on for 80 more chapters.

It was certainly a pretty damn sudden finish.  And those two guys sure came out of left field.

This feels like a rush job. It was nice, even good, but that ending felt like a dumpster fire to try and finish off the story while ignoring the waste.

The brother got ignored, quite literally in a narrative sense. He was worse than a flash in the pan. He came out swinging like he was going for it, but one hint of rejection and he literally disappears from the narrative. It's completely contrary to the interference-style character he had built up until then. It should have taken no less than a flat "I'm not interested in you" to his face to stop him.

Then the "I like you" to fin in one chapter was insane. I realize there weren't many characters in this story, but the shaft given to them was unreal. They were all there to be foil characters, but they only served half their purpose, and weren't there to show how the main couple's relationship had changed.

Was going in an ok pace, then wrapped up all in one go? Not sure if axe or lack of interest to keep the work going.....

 

On to the next.....

Glad I found another cute yuri manhwa, but it still pisses me off how dumb the drama is. We get two characters who are childhood friends for a long time, never had any fights until the series about them starts. We get a transfer student that decides to mess with one of them, gets them to fight for the first time just to go back with an apology; and the transfer student is gone. Then we get a mini arc with no build up of a random teacher in love with one of the girls just to end in the most cliche way possible. And now this lastest mini arc with the random little brother in love with the bff of the fmc. As much as I like my yuri, this is just a collection of mini stories that are made just to force the relationship between them. Cheap drama, with annoying supporting cast and stupid female leads. At most I give it a 5/10

Yes, agreed. I was thinking Autumn has a better sound name-wise, but uncharacteristically I wasn't in a wall-of-text mood so I left it at making just one point.

Abyssal Monkey makes a lot of good points.  Now I don't know what I think.

So then should I change the title to 'Between Yeo-reum and Ga-eul'? hahaha Also I do cut like all honorifics out, since I translated for an American or English pov (readers)

In the title, I think it's fine. The pun is there, and mentioning what the character's names in the first chapter where they appeared makes the pun in the title work in English fine. I just hate to imagine mid conversation something like "Summer totally hates Ja-yun nim because he spilled drinks on Autumn who was talking to Park-soon oppa." The amount of multilingual clutter would make for a wild sentence.

I think of it this way, if you were in Korea talking English with the characters in the cast, would you call Ga-ul Autumn (in English)? I sure hope not. Context in translation is important, if they were in America, it might be more justified, especially if another English character gave her that as a nickname in English.

That's just my opinion though. I feel it's reasonable, but I'm also well aware I'm fringe when other people consider 'reason'.

I disagree for reasons other than "localization should translate the names". Names should never be translated or localized outside of their expected use. If you take Japanese for example, and a person was named Claire in katakana, yes absolutely translate it, it's a mocked up loan word for the English name. On the other hand, you would never translate something like Sakura to "Cherri" or something, it doesn't make sense to just change the name. Even if there was a series named "Sky's Blue" with the main character being named Aoi, changing the name of the character name simply for the sake of the pun in the name simply does not make for good reading, leading to easy mistakes between references to color and name, especially when honorifics are often dropped. It's mundane and serves no extra purpose more than simply noting the meaning of a character's name.

Changing names I find is simply poor work in every respect. If the name is clearly meant to be a name, make it that name. There is no reason to change Ga-ul to Autumn/Fall. If her name was literally "Autumn" or "Fall" phonetically in Korean, and is obviously intended to reference the season, go for it, but just short of that, I see no appreciable extra meaning in localizing it, especially if it is just the two main cast. It would stick out like a sore thumb.

Normally I might agree, but in this case the meaning of their names is a theme in the story, part of the title and stuff. So I'd favour translating the names in this case. "Between Summer and Fall" is a way better gimmick when the girls' names are "Summer" and "Fall" than when their names are "Yeo-Reum" and "Ga-Eul".

The font the new scanlator is using is kind of difficult to read sometimes.

They're so sweet together! I'm a complete sucker for childhood friend relationships.
