A master piece. I'd say it's a must read.

I think it would have been better for this manga to end at

Spoiler

I really loved this manga from start to finish though, and would recommend it to anyone who is even the slightest bit interested in cooking, and great character development.

That twist in the end...Was unessesary I believe.

I like this manga. I really do. But fuck if that wasn't the cheapest thing the author could have pulled off right before the ending. Just seemed completely unnecessary, shoved in out of nowhere because MOAR DRAMA.

This manga was unbelievable. Read it in a day.

Honestly, the TRUEST depiction of a cook's starting points. Literally were seeing ghosts of people I cooked with in this, down to the assholes and violence. Sure some bits are a little bit out there (maybe borrowed a bit from the Bourdain school of life experience and writing for the mafia bit), but honestly, so much of it was spot on- the insane hours, the exhaustion, the desire to show up assholes who look down on you, the f'ed up people who choose the work, the machismo that flows around, the difficulty of women in the industry, the fluidity and improvement in efficiency of movement in a tight kitchen space, to finally "make your bones". Hell, despite the exaggerations, the NYC latino cooks are the truth. The anger and personality of bambino felt like seeing a personal history, it freaked me out.

Even the melodrama towards the end- shit happens- world don't stop, and cooks don't stop. And good cooks bond together over loss, good resto's close ranks around their injured. That shit is just too f'in real. Seriously, this manga is the most realistic depiction of restaurant life out there.

Only nit to pick- some of the art is kinda weird, and sometimes REALLY does the food a disservice. Too shaded, and attempts at realism, whereas a sillier manga like shokugeki no souma is really enticing to look at. Meh, trade off what it is, this manga def holds it down for the realism side. Killer.

Havent read the sequel yet, but can tell his underling is gonna be a problem. Some places are better at handling this stuff than others, but working with cooks under you is all about delegation and management and bambino has no experience with that. And he's clearly too nice to do anything about it- sigh. Show him once how to do it right, watch him do it right, and if he KEEPS f'in up, and being shit to your face, kick his ass out the kitchen till he willingly does it right. Betting that doesn't happen tho =D

freaking darn. One huge ass cliff hanger. I thought it was weird when it said final chapter...

I just read all of this in one day. I'm so bummed that Secondo has not been scanlated.

I've read all the cooking-tagged mangas on Batoto. Can anyone recommend some other ones that haven't been tagged?

Doesn´t the last incident open the story for asuka and ban getting together?

This is an exceptional manga. For the most part, it avoids many of the more annoying cliches that plague manga. This is not the story of a scrappy genius, who with the flick of his nose and a one-liner, pulls a victory out of his ass. No, this is a more realistic look at a little fish, from a little pond, thrust into the ocean. Shugo Ban is a young man with talent, but it takes a great deal of effort, time, and trail for him to utilize it. We get to see this protagonist evolve, not only in culinary ability, but also in the way of his maturity. Ban has fears, frustrations, ambitions, and he doesn't always get the girl. He's as solid of a protagonist as I've seen in any manga. What happens to him you can believe can happen to anyone (except for the New York story arch).

It still holds true to some of the exaggerated nature in most manga, but it does so in a very natural way. I never feel as though the manga is approaching the absurdity that crept into Yaketate!! Japan (except for New York).

 Also, the art is top-notch.

Why there aren't any translators working on the sequel to this manga is baffling.

I want the secondo!!! <33
But thank you so much for finishing this series!!

I find that "kill SO" bit now a bit annoying as a plot point.
