That was cute, but... They were girlfriends in the original. Was this before the story ended, or maybe it was a translation error? I doubt the mangaka would have forgotten.

There is a second chapter 5 ending where instead of confessing she says to wait until after the tournament for her request (confession)

It apparently takes place somewhere during chapter 5, while Yamada and Kase are training for the marathon together.
