Hmm. For some reason the whole story just seems like a grimdark twist of Harry Potter. (In case you forgot, Harry and his friends basically break the whole "don't let muggles know you're a wizard!"-rule every book.)

"Poor Maria" nothing! She brought that on herself. She got jealous of her lack of power compared to him and lashed out, essentially siding with the rebels they're supposed to be hunting. She refuses to accept her limitations and swallow her pride long enough to get the job done and this is the result. I have no sympathy for her situation.
