Granny's philosophy has its merits, however I prefer a slightly different approach.

Is it just me or does the grandma's diving gear in her youth look too modern? I don't want to dismiss the possibility that scuba gear has not improved much in the last 50 years (I'm a layman) but shouldn't the gear look more primitive? More metal elements and less plastic ones?

Or can we associate this discrepancy to the fact that this is pretty much a fairytale (e.g. the dream chapters or even wayback Aria was pretty much a fairytale too)?

Are we stuck with this dream crap, or will we get back to the main story focus soon?

I haven't looked to see if there are Raws beyond volume 9 myself.
But honestly you could just about end the story right there and it would feel like a perfect ending. 

Well . . . a pretty dashed good ending.  For me, a perfect ending would involve Dotty and Pikari getting married.  Not that anything like that is going to happen, it's just, if we're on the subject.

So great seeing chapters translated and released so close together. I looked ahead in the raws and can't wait to see them translated to really find out what is happening.

These chapters have really connected this and the world of Aria. It just has that few hundred years separating them.

the pulp fiction magazines, contributed to by people like Robert E. Howard and C.L. Moore, were an American phenomenon which Tolkien may have been vaguely aware of, but they really weren't a tradition he was drawing on.  They're interesting in their own right.  I'd say the two streams, one being the American pulps and the other being the British tradition, with people like George MacDonald, Eric Rucker Eddison and Lord Dunsany as the main preludes to Tolkien, were running separate but after Tolkien brought the idea of fantasy books into the public imagination the genre that came into being drew on both of them fairly equally.

"Contemporary popular middle ages magazine pulp fiction culture from the 20s onwards?"  I really have to take exception to that description.  I don't blame you, as I recognize the tone as typical of many of the critics who hated and reviled Tolkien's works with a passion (and some who continue to hate him to this day).  While I agree that Tolkien's experience as a trench soldier in WWI and living through WWII contributed greatly to his work (like Kurt Vonnegut, Ernest Hemingway, and others), the essential guts of the story line do not come from "pulp fiction," but from intimate knowledge of Old English, Finnish, Icelandic, Gothic, and Old German epic poetry.  He wrote the earliest stories of his mythology during WWI, to essentially put a "world" to his creation of the Elvish Language.  His works are written from a Philological point of view (very much out of academic fashion for the last sixty or so years) which believes that language and literature (either oral or written) are inseparable as study disciplines.  Many critics of his work, from the 1950's until the present, have attempted to equate his work to G. A. Henty or Horatio Alger books with swords and armor.  Even if one does not care for his writings, to dismiss them as puerile or as the fantasy equivalent of a Harlequin novel is to unequivocally show one's ignorance.  His academic background was Oxford University (three separate colleges), and he was credited by many, including Seamus Heaney, as the man who pretty much rediscovered the poem Beowulf and brought it to the attention of the academic world.  One of the earliest admirers of his published work (LOTR) was W. H. Auden, an author twice short-listed for the Nobel prize in literature.  Those critics who feel ill at the mere thought of his works enjoy neither the academic nor the literary reputation of Heaney or Auden.

As I'd earlier mentioned my point of view was briefly informed by a short if necessarily shallow review of available internet articles concerning pre Tolkien fantasy literature. My intent regarding 1920's american fantasy pulp fiction was meant to highlight the existence of the earlier market for this form of fiction, regrettably the depth of my search ignored technical details as to whether this had actually any direct influence on Tolkien's works.

On the upside I now have a few more earlier age authors and historical mythology to pursue in my spare time.

bits of it are a little slow however, LOTR was the work of a lifetime and created much of the mainstream fantasy genre though even his works came out of a contemporary popular middle ages magazine pulp fiction culture from the 20s onwards. the shadows of the Two world wars warfare of industrial scale killing and superweapons lie heavily.
