Catan's already been mentioned; in the flashback to when Midori joined the game shop in chapter 8, it's mentioned that Catan is one of her favorites, which is fairly impressive since she was only twelve then. I expect the gang will play it sooner or later; perhaps after the as-yet-unknown blonde (foreigner?) girl on the cover joins since then they'll have four.

Plus, then they wouldn't be friends anymore.
Maybe "Twilight Imperium Three" instead.

Too complex.  They want Eurogames with simple rules.  Anything for which the rules can't be listed on a single double-sided sheet of paper is going to be too much.  Diplomacy, while the rules are simple enough, I agree that it is a) too long and b) too mean-spirited for this manga.

I would assert that any highly ranked Chess or Shogi player that seems to be headstrong is putting up a front.

I know a lot of great shogi and chess players and it's rare but there are those who get riled up easily all the same amongst them.

Let alone the impression I get, separate from firsthand experience, from what's portrayed of the best by a collaboration of the author and the shogi community in Sangatsu no Lion with temperamental professional players.

Okamoto Nobuhiko/Shikorin from Sangatsu's cast as Bakugo in BokuHero being 3dan himself, gets flustered at times in the same manner during strategy moments too. despite being an intellectual most times.

If you read on the last two pages it's hinted at that the chess guy let him win... (I mean even he was shocked he won in the end)... 

It looked to me undisputedly that he didn't predict that he'd be predicted.

That he thought lowly of the shogi old coot, and to me, that smirk as he walked away reinforces that he's content that the other guy managed to grow enough to be able to read his opponent. If the chess guy intended to let him win and made any move different from his natural chain of thought, the other guy would have been the one to over-read the situation and would have lost. Similar to the snake comment in the slave-king card game from Kaiji, it's a situation that would come about not from over reading but by ignoring that and taking the natural course of action which was over reading the situation.

 

My comment was because in Japanese fiction, there are a lot of foreigner characters that exist merely as a foil character to the Japanese character in a high stakes plot device which ends with the Japanese representative, so to speak, winning either the relationship and getting the happy ending in a SoL or getting trumped by some superior Japanese tactic. Just basing off things like Saenai Heroine as of recent and the last decade of binging a variety of series and genres with the token foreigner character losing. (Charlotte in IS or Drills from Ladies&Butlers just off the top of my head) I just think it's ridiculous to lose a probability at teaching people who would otherwise have no exposure to chess due to the penalty of the game they played. In Japan, there are really few things that strive from foreign culture influence (baseball and such) and my Japanese friends all agree that they would prefer the chance to see more of genuinely imported culture, to help broaden their worldview. Like the presence of a neighborhood chess professional in Japan that's willing to teach being placed under a gag order would be a real waste.

I always get disappointed when the brash and headstrong buffoon ends up winning over the calm and civilised character in any fictional work, and inviting people to forgo common sense in a mad rush with most mainstream fictional works these days. I've always been much more of a fan of those headstrong buffoons that are putting up a farce to trap people though, which isn't the case here in my opinion.

 

Does the author personally have bad memories of chess apart from using it as a story element here to promote healthy and friendly competition?

I have to say those pages do add quite a bit of punch to the end of the chapter, so I think Chapter 10 should really just be re-uploaded with all of the new pages added where they should be.

I might to do that as well(I only did it this way so that skim sites would pick up the new "chapter"). Chapter 10 has been replaced here though if you look.

It's very simplistic - I guess Aya's thought that it's a game that everyone can play is correct, but it's not something that either chess or shogi players would love to play. She could have brought hanafuda or poker and it'll be the same. 

 

It'll be similar to playing either game with just the pawns. It takes away all the complications and tactics that both games boast and simplifies both of it down to something you could play as if you were playing checkers. 

 

There are other more complicated games that may have been more suitable, but.. I dunno. I'm not sure it's a good suggestion is all.

 

Also, regarding Xiangqi - I think shogi is a bit more complicated - it's like they took Xiangqi and added bits of chess in there. Having said that, I must admit that I only know the basic rules of shogi, so it may be the complications of the pieces that makes me think that.

Oh lord, with this chapter being about old people playing games with a high school girl in the park, all I can think of is this.

The conceit is that command staff should stay in headquarters rather than running around the battlefield fighting. Similarly, there are two defensive units that have to stay on your side of the board, and five offensive units whose movement range increases on the enemy side of the board.

Chinese chess (Xiangqi), anyone? no?

Uh, i may be wrong here, but i think the point is to NOT reveal the card of the player eliminated?
That way you never know if the person was a werewolf or not, and it also lets the remaining players lie about their "jobs", since the real one could be dead already.
At least, thats how i always played it.


I believed you might have played the other variation of werewolves. There are other Werewolves game like One Night, Ultimate Werewolves, Jinro, Town of Salem. various gameplay and house rule specially associated to those variants. Intrigue and Deception game all have different quality to the elimination aspect.

Ahem, played the crap out of variations of this game, mostly the base version but man do things get fun with the expanded rules! You get extra roles aside from villager and werewolf, some human some not. True insanity (and fun) lies in getting together a huge (20+) player game at a convention or other large gathering. Being a werewolf in a large game and making it for a long while is almost as adrenaline inducing for me as paintball. Highly recommend it.

While as being the moderator for a large group, particularly in one of the variants that imposes no time limit on discussions -Looney Labs' Are You a Werewolf?-can be hell.  I helped out at a con and ran a group since they were running out of mods, and it literally took those villagers more than an hour to make almost every decision.  I found myself going up and down the escalators nearby out of sheer boredom.  NEVER AGAIN.

I remember all the times I've played "Werewolves of Miller's Hollow". That game is a real thrill and also a good way to introduce people to tabletop RPGs.
