This is one of my favorite manga of all-time, I got to read a copy of the licensed translation from my local library and it was incredible. Some parts haven't exactly aged well, a lot of the storytelling mechanics definitely feel dated. If it were to be written today, a lot of things would have been different.
While some people don't like the art, I have to say that I think it actually adds to the atmosphere. It helped remind me that this was from another era, and that it's fictional. Actually, that mental boundary is probably the only reason I was able to read it. As I read it I couldn't help but think how some scenes would be hard to stomach if they were drawn more realistically.
Honestly, this story is really one of the most horrific stories I've ever read in any medium. The exact circumstances are a bit exaggerated, and the plot is definitely ridiculous at times, but you know that there were people in real life who suffered those or similar situations and felt that exact type of pain. After seeing the death of one of the Adolfs' fathers, I just had to set down the book and reflect over how awful that whole time period was. Good people died for no reason, and millions of good children were turned into monsters. No one wins in this story, none of the characters are totally "pure" or "good". Even the Japanese protagonist isn't the most moral person, I never forgot what he did at the start.
If the art were super-realistic, I don't think I could have read ANY of it. It would have just been too depressing, I'd never want to read it again. But it's just cartoonish enough that I can still enjoy it AS I read it, without being overwhelmed by dread to the point I had to stop. While the message in it is important, manga is also created to entertain readers, and this is definitely an enjoyable story. The artwork is DEFINITELY a major factor in that.
Adolf Kaufmann is the most flawed main character, and it actually makes him the most interesting compared to the others who are too black-and-white. This manga is a masterpiece.

This is already licensed in America, though. I first read it like 3 years ago.

Pluto was actually a remake of Astro Boy's most popular arc, done long after his death.
Re: The art, Tezuka was supposedly influenced by Disney & I guess that shows. Let's not forget that he also worked on several manga at the same time & was supposed to have done 700+ in his life. Keeping the art "functional" would have helped maintain the productivity. Anyway, the art works in that you can feel the emotion & sense that the story is moving quickly. I feel that our opinion on how seinen is supposed to look is also heavily influenced by modern seinen masters.

The Clockwork Apple have serious story , but the art... Its like im watching Mickey Mouse. But i am happy that Pluto had such an amazing art. Tezuka only participated as author there , but he did good job.
Eh, no. His art has aged very badly and makes his more serious work unnecessarily cartoonish.
Luckily enough, though, his best works are such that you can easily get over that, and Adolf is definitely one of them.

Do you know who Tezuka Osamu is? Without him, manga wouldn't be what it is today. He is the God of Manga. His art is good!
