This manga...

Rather that shopkeeper was really nice, Way to nice with that guy.

So you say that erasing the moemories of ONE person is enough to pay for the life of another?  That makes no sense.

I have a hypothesis: that your life in this setting can only be quantified by the people whose opinions you would accept.

Assuming that his own parents gave up on him when this story began, that would mean Kumi was the only light in his life when he started buying abilities. The shopkeeper may have known that, and claimed it for herself when he paid the final price. Perhaps that was her long game: to ultimately whisk away her customers' bonds.

A rather cheap cop-out of an ending. A story like this, based around the protagonist learning a hard lesson from the consequences of their actions, is really undermined when it just ends up as a really basic zero sum game with the resolution being as subtle as nuclear bomb.

Given that any sane author/artist will definitely pull some strings to justify that ending, I suggest that perhaps the author intended for Kumi to trade her memories of Toshiki in return for clearing off his debt. It's implied by how Kumi supposedly forgot about him, and the fact that she's the only other character in the story. You know, usual stuff.

I think that the author just got tired of the complications such a story plot would give him and decided to call it quits

sad, really, because with a 70 year life span and many potential friends, it could have been something like Bleach

So, you can buy supernatural powers with your life force?

And he never thought of, say, the ability to leech other people's life force?

damn what a slut , she should of stayed dead

Pretty heavy-handed. Could be interesting if there was more time to develop and they didn't telegraph a twist that's been used a thousand times before.

Wow wtf ending... He didn't gain anything, he only lost... Poor poor guy.

Are you joking? He gained everything, although it wasnt anything physical or an increase in intelligence he learned a fucking great lesson which will change his life and perspective of it.

a great one shot, it had a really deep message behind it, i would like this to be serialize and she him gain the girl and some abilities
I don't think thís is a tragedy. Should it be a Tragedy he would end up losing something, other than his week that was spent while enjoying his abilities.
I'm pretty bad with tragic endings, since I always see them as good endings.

@Seishi: Yeah, it's a really a good reading; however in real life a lot of times you won't get a 2nd chance...

C
@Seishi.
It was abt a witch and her partner demon? going around selling items with magical powers to ppl and taking their desires in return. I dont think it is xxxholic , may be wrong though
@atdy587

You may be thinking of xxxHOLiC.
A good read, and a good lesson. I'm kinda glad it ended that way.
I read this before a few year back. It was quite interesting but there was another manga with a similar concept. Just cant remember the name atm.
Good read, and definitely want more
Disappointing end , worth a read.
