It's not just girls and has nothing to do with "having a man". Japanese people in general tend to think of both holidays like Christmas and birthdays as a "lover's day" rather than a family celebration. The actual day is generally spent romantically with one's significant other, and then there will be a celebration sometime near the actual date with friends or family. As a result, if dealing with these days, most manga will emphasize that fact because it's considered negative if a person is single as an adult, regardless if that person is male or female. Once you hit your mid-20s, parents will often set up blind dates for the purpose of marriage (omiai) if you don't already have a partner, because they don't want their kids to be forever alone.
I'm literally only in this because I've been obsessed with Momoe and Arthur from the beginning.
Right, because the only person you can possibly spend your b-day with, is a boyfriend >_>
No sisters, brothers mom or dad, friends.. Just a boyfriend. Like, its some unspoken rule that they have to have a man to have any life.

You know who really pisses me off? "zexy"! I mean... WTH? Get your own male harem! that's a leech that preys on those around her "friends"... and sadly, I have had the "pleasure" to experience that it is the best portrayed real life slice of the whole manga...
Yeah........At first I was really angry with the monk for continuing this bullshit like a spoiled super ignorant brat. And lately I started to hate Junkos guts too. She is also a spoiled brat who doesn't know what she wants. They deserve each other. I'll say good riddance to the two of them and to this manga....
Yup. I am officially tired of the lead romance now, Junko sensei has made her bed might as well burn her in it. All the other potential pairings haven't gone to a shitty place yet though so let's get back to them please.

This is late but I thought I'd let you and others know, I've never read Hot Gimmick. Gave up after the first few chapters in sheer mortal terror over what I've heard about it. Not just rapey, but basically attempted, and lots of played straight abuse that's supposed to seem sexy but totally isn't?
Probably most kept reading it for the same reason a lot of us are still on this one - the infuriating feelings which make you want to rant and drive your passion to see these idiots get punished/better/justice/Idon'tevenknow. (And the obvious plus of Arthur and Momo <3)

Ohhh, no wonder I bailed quick. This is the mangaka of Hot Gimmick? Hot Gimmick is notoriously rapey. Another one I read a couple of chapters of and was like "OK, this isn't even a guilty pleasure, this is just creepy", but it's sort of known for being messed up.

Is it just me or are there some missing pages on chapter 17? I am quite surprised she didn't physically lashed out at him. Which is good. And quite disappointed on the route she chooses to take. It is a bit disheartening that she had to do that to affirm her self worth, that she is not his possession (it doesn't help at all, the fact that she is thinking about him all the way through and apologizing too). The consequences will not be in her favor later.
A marriage between them is completely off the table now, because in the end they are just going to resent each other and ended up with a divorce. I've been thinking since I read the manga, Takane (the monk) is not used to be with a woman like Junko and frankly, I highly think he never was the type of person he is now with Junko in the picture - oppressed, jealous etc. It seems every girl he's been with will easily obey him (so as he says), hence he has no reason to act as he does. Junko on the other hand is someone who is her own woman, who wants things to be done on her own terms. She is really not thinking about marriage, ever since chapter 1, all she's been telling herself is how much she wants to go abroad and live her life - as a career woman first and foremost. So to meet someone like Junko, he has this need to change her perspective because she is an anomaly to his regiment. This self need to paint her a clear picture that marrying into a monastery is not so and so according to her. "Why won't this girl yield to me?" - this motion alone planted an awful behavior and it just keeps getting worse and worse. It was just a simple 'lock you up trick' and now he is abusing his power to trap her in - that is the worst thing someone would do to you honestly. I don't really know any way for Junko and Takane to have a happy ending if they are going to end up with each other in the end. To simply explain things and get it out there on the table between these two to sort things out would be too easy for the writer, not in her style at all.
This is my first manga by this author. Is Hot Gimmick any worse than 5 to 9? I am not saying this manga is bad, is just the mentality of the characters are very screwed. No matter how infuriating the story is (don't get me started on the gender stigma this manga proposed as well! That is on another topic completely), I cannot stop reading. It's addicting in a way. I like what the author is trying to do too, she is giving us straight as it is - don't always expect rainbows and flowers and that there is people similar to these characters living and breathing in our world. It's despicable, but that is the gist of reality. There will be people like Maori-san, or Hachiya. Junko and Takane, precisely always ends up confusing their priorities and their potential true feelings with their desires, ego, greed and pride. In the end roping one another in an entangle web. It's a whole misunderstanding merely base on an outward interaction! The story pisses me off one moment and the next give me the impression that the characters might turn over a new leaf, I am certain my frowned eyebrows won't go away anytime soon with each coming chapter. Although I am still looking forward to it because the development of the story so far is indeed riveting. Besides, we have Momoe and Arthur's side story as the author's way of making it up to us.
I just picked up this series and I kind of want to drop this but I am so sucked in......
I love manga about the working adult woman, and stuff is going down, buuuuut....
I guess in the end I just want to see if Junko can actually learn to make a smart decision for once.
Or maybe I'm just here for Momoe. Perfect measures of sharp and clueless = super hilarious and totally awesome.
Edit: Oh god I just read the other comments. I didn't realize this was made by the same author as Hot Gimmick! Welp, too late now. Choo choo everyone! Onboard the trainwreck to hell!

As much as I can't stop reading Aihara's stories, her characters make me so mad. It's like I never learn.

Omg he's completely delusional! At first it was sort of cute that he fell in love, but then suddenly it becomes this sick power trip for him where he has to "correct" her and her behavior. He could just go and fuck himself!! So annoying.
