So what was the trick behind
"Comrade" is the best one-to-one literal translation I'm aware of for "nakama". "Companions" also works, so long as it's used like "King Arthur and his companions" rather than some of the more intimate uses. Co-workers is too specific. Partners is just wrong, excepting maybe some very specific contexts.
AFAIK "Friends" is only contextually accurate for "nakama" if you're watching One Piece or something else shounen-jump-ish (which is I believe also why some fan-translations stopped translating "nakama" and just printed it verbatim in One Piece; they felt it had taken on it's own power-of-freindship sort of meaning for the series).
"Close friends" would be the more correct term. If you use "partners" then it have to be the non-sexual/marital kind, eg. Co-workers, comrades.
Well that depends on your individual memory span... I found 20th Century Boys way better than even Monster just because it is more complex and deals with more themes.
How did you miss that? It's the subject of an entire chapter, chapter 212: he used her boyfriend's (secretly taped) words. (As for so soon, is two years soon?)
You obviously missed the last 16 chapters of the manga, which have been published under the title 21st Century Boys. The identity of Friend 2 is revealed in the very last chapter (though the earliest clear hints I found when I re-read the entire manga were in chapters 121 and 173).
tomodachi => friends
nakama => partners
Pretty weird wreading this in 2014
dayumm... after i read the 1st chapter... i cant stop reading it..... its like drugs .... hahah
...btw is "friends" in japan translation said as "nakama" or something else?
I just recently started reading this and while reading chapter 64, I came across the note in the margin on this page:
I was really confused at the ending, but then I realised that the last two volumes are actually nested under 21st Century Boys!

I must disagree with everyone here. I was very disappointed with this work. Compared to Monster this wasnt anywhere near as good or complete. I am saying this in comparison to Monster. Overall this story was good, but not great. There were many things that were never explained and the story just went on for WAY too long. It got really boring and annoying towards the 2nd half of the story. I actually started to lose interest. I would absolutely recommend reading this, as it is still better than most BS Manga of today, but I was really looking forward to something as complete and good as Monster. Monster was just perfect almost all the way around. Everything was explained and no loose end was left untied for the most part. In this story it just got too complicated. Another thing is that the story gets a little ridiculous and unrealistic as it progresses. There are way too many characters and too many details that need to be remembered for a story as long as this. And one of the parts I was DYING to see was how Friend seduced Kenji's sister. Like how the F did she bang Friend and get pregnant so soon after her boyfriend passed away? They never showed this!! ANd then of course they dont even show who the heck the last villain is. WTF is up with that? Was Fukabei a twin? Guess we will never know. Hate endings that leave you with no answers. Anyway, I am not the only one who feels let down by this story, many others in my Manga Club here at College feel the same way. I'm thinking because we all read Monster first that this one just couldnt couldn't match up in terms of its completeness as a great story. Anyway, in conclusion, I was disappointed with this as a story by Urasawa Naoki who wrote a real masterpiece like Monster, but I still think overall this was a good read. It was interesting and original and it did keep me reading until the end. I'd give it a 7.5/10. Cheers people and keep on enjoying your comics!
Masterpiece. Yes just as everyone else has said....this is a freaking masterpiece! You knooow it's going to be good with this many people loving it to this point. XD
we dont get to know whos the 2nd friend is, kewl
That is when you know your reading something good enough to make you feel things. Really enjoyed this story also.
Don't get me wrong, I really LOVE this manga, but just sometimes...when the bad guy is just there doing one of their crazy speeches...I just wish someone would just walk up to them and kick them in the nuts.
In one word : splendid.
